Hi Bill;
I have experience with both questions. First the 0-290 is a great engine, period. It is very similar to the early 0-320 Narrow Decks. The early Super Cubs and cruisers had this engine and didn't need fuel pumps however, the blank pad is there on some cases and you can machine out the hole, put in a pump gear and you are in business. Some 0-320 ND acc cases will retrofit, check with a Lycoming shop. You can also find an 0-290G case that has been modified for 2 mags and a pump through the Thorpe T18 folks www.t18.net or even run 2 electric fuel pumps all the time (pri and boost) and have a header tank behind the inst panel which leads into my next answer.
The Aero Carb by aeroconversions was specifically designed for small continentals
and VW's to provide a gravity feed fuel system with a throttle-body type
carb set-up. When you hook a fuel pump to it there are problems outlined in the
following article with photos. I recommend a marvel carb for simplicity if you
don't plan to do acro.

The 0-290 is a great engine and there are alot of them out there providing 7gph
flying on a budget and very light weight. I have flown one in a T18, Cessna 140
and an RV4 and found them to have alot of bang for the buck.
Good Luck!

1. 03:00 PM - Lycoming O-290 D2B accessory case question (Bill Repucci)

Subject: RV4-List: Lycoming O-290 D2B accessory case question
--> RV4-List message posted by: "Bill Repucci"
I purchased the above mentioned engine for my RV-9. It appears to be in
great shape and has low time, I'll find out more when I start
disassembling it.
The only gottcha is that it doesn't have a fuel pump, which prompted the
following questions:
1) What O-290 accessory cases accept the fuel pump and where should I
look for such a thing?
2) Can I substitute an accessory case from an O-235 or O-320? If so,
which ones?
3) Are any of you flying with an Aero Carb from Sonex
(http://www.aeroconversions.com/carb_index.html)? If so, could you give
me some feedback?
If all else fails, I'm thinking I could install two electric fuel pumps,
with check valves, one pump fused directly to the battery, etc. but I
would prefer to have an engine driven pump.
Thanks for the help!
