For about $10 in parts I built a valve that can shut off the airflow to my
oil cooler. The valve OD is just slightly smaller than the ID of the 3 inch
scat tubing that takes air from the upper cowling to my cooler. The valve
can be opened and closed from the cockpit, and can be used to keep my oil
temps between 190-210 degrees, winter and summer, here in Missouri.

Hey Guys,
I have a -4 with an O-320-D1A, 160hp and it consistantly runs cool...in the
mid to upper 160 degree F range. Can this cause any engine problems or
damage...either short or long term?

Lucky you, my 150HP ran over 225F oil temp for a year at cruise until I
finally fixed the problem. If you are really worried, move to Phoenix for a
week in the summer and see the alternative, or put a plate with small holes
in it over the cooler. Don't worry, be happy!

Does your engine have a Vernatherm valve incorporated in the oil screen
housing?
If not , then the oil circulated through the oil cooler all the time. The
Vernatherm opens when the oil heats up,and lets it circulate through the
cooler, then closes when the oil cools down.
The oil could run so cool in cold weather that circulation would be
inhibited.

Hey all -- I'm a Pitts driver but with a similar issue re: engine too cool
in the winter -- I have heard about duct tape around the oil cooler, but
has anyone actually done this? If so, how much duct tape and where exactly
do you place it?
Thanks --
