Subject: | [PLEASE READ] - Why Do I Have A Fund Raiser Each Year? |
--> RV4-List message posted by: Matt Dralle <dralle@matronics.com>
Dear Listers,
I was thinking that perhaps I should explain why I have a Fund Raiser and
also take the opportunity to express why I think the List Services here
provide a far better experience than the commercial equivalents.
I use the List Fund Raiser each year to offset the costs involved with
running a high performance email list site such as this one. With the
annual support from the List members through the PBS-like Fund Raiser, I
have found I can run the entire site without having to inflect any of the
members with those annoying banner ads flashing up all the time trying to
sell Toner Cartridge Refills or other garbage nobody wants or needs. From
the comments I've received over the years regarding the Lists, the great
majority of the members really appreciate the non-commercialism of my List
systems and don't mind my 'go-team-go' banter once a year to encourage
members to support the Lists.
I believe that the Lists services that I provide here offer a great many
benefits over the commercial equivalents in a number of ways. The first
feature I believe to be particularly significant is that you *cannot*
receive a computer v*rus from any of my Lists directly. I've been on a few
other List servers and have been unfortunate enough to download infected
files people have innocently or not-so-innocently included with their
posts. This just can't happen with my Lists; each incoming message is
filtered and attachments stripped off prior to posting. I provide a Photo
and File Share feature that allows members to share files and bitmaps with
other members and everyone can be assured that these files will be
prescanned for any sort of v*rus before they are posted. Safe and
simple. Also, with this photo and file sharing technique, the Archives
don't get loaded up with a huge amounts of bitmap "data" that slows the
Archive Search times.
Another feature of this system is the extensive List Archives that are
available for download, browsing, and searching. The Archives go all the
way back to the very beginning of each List and with the super fast Search
Engine, the huge size of the Archives is a non-issue in quickly finding the
data you're looking for. Another feature of the Archives, in my opinion,
is that they have been primarily stripped of all the useless email header
garbage that seems to build up in a typical email thread.
I have received an extremely positive response from Listers regarding the
List Browse feature and the consensus is that the format and ease of use is
outstanding. Members report that having the previous 7 days worth of
messages on line for easy browsing and sorting is hugely beneficial. And
again, as with the real time distribution of List email, the messages are
stripped of all the unnecessary email headers and potentially dangerous
v*ruses.
I've been running email Lists and services under the matronics.com domain
since about 1989 starting with RV-List and 30 guys who I knew and who where
also building RVs. It has grown into well over 50 different
aviation-related Email Lists and an associated web site that receives over
13,000,000 hits each year!! Additionally, the List email system forwards
well over 32,000,000 (yes, that's 32 MILLION) email messages to subscribers
each year! With all the dot.bombs these days, I think there's a lot of
value in supporting a service that has gone the long haul and is still
providing and improving a high quality service at a price that's nearly free.
I have to admit running these Lists is a labor of love and I hope it shows
in the quality of the experience that you receive when you get a List Email
Message, Search the Archives, or use the List Browser. The Lists will be
here for a long time to come. If you just want to lurk a while for free,
that's great and I encourage you to do so. If you use, appreciate, and
receive value from these Lists, then please support them during the Annual
List Fund Raiser!

Subject: | Looking for an RV-4, Boulder, CO |
1.16 EARN_MONEY BODY: Message talks about earning money
--> RV4-List message posted by: "David J. Mittelstadt" <djmittelstadt@qwest.net>
I am interested in finding an RV-4 within flying/driving distance of
Boulder, CO (1V5) that I could touch and feel. I would like to take a
close look, and sit in the seats to get a feel for what it is. I'd also
love to take a flight if that would be possible, but that is not a requirement.
I am interested in buying a plane and believe the RV-4 might be the one for me.
I am also interested in building, but suspect I would build one of the
other RVs. With a family of 4, the RV-10 might be a better long-term plane
for the whole gang.
At the moment I have time to fly, not build and fly, so I think buying a
completed RV-4 would be best. I am thinking primarily 180hp RV-4, but am
open to considering the 160hp versions.
Any comments about the RV-4 would also be appreciated.
I am in love with the Citabria. I very much enjoy the tailwheel. I would
like to own something a bit faster, and a bit more aerobatically capable
(especially at this altitude). Aerobatics are not my main focus, but I
expect to spend some time learning and practicing in this way. I will
spend a lot of time drilling holes in the sky, and making $100 hamburger
runs. I will(may) also periodically take cross-country flights from Denver
to Wisconsin, San Diego, CA, Portland, OR, and Salt Lake City, UT. While I
don't expect to fly long IFR flights I think an IFR platform would be nice
to get me out of the first 50nm of bad weather in northern Wisconsin.
If anyone would be willing to show me their RV-4, I'd love to find a time.
Thanks,
David Mittelstadt

Dave,
Anything else I could get you while I'm up? You don't want much do ya...ha! Seriously, your requests could all probably be handled by a visit to your local EAA chapter or finding the local RV builders group. They can be found on Links in www.vansairforce.net
I saw my first RV in a magazine, bought it piece by piece while living overseas
and like most RVers finished it after many years of sweat equity and help from
friends. Also, my first RV flight was me doing the test flight on my own airplane.
I felt comfortable doing it based on my own experience, would you? Alot
has changed since then in the RV world. so, before you get too far along here
are some things you should know. The RV4 is by far the most incredible compromise
civilian lightplane on the market. Bonanza speed on a Cherokee budget,
Super cub climb, C172 approach speeds Pitts S1C control feel. However, it ain't
for beginners. I just helped recover a wrecked "store-bought" RV4 damaged during
landing buffoonery by an inexperienced pilot. He's lucky to be alive. The
NTSB files are full of similar RV4 stories. What is your flying experience?
Flying/driving distance from Boulder could be Florida in an RV4, I made Pueblo
for lunch from FL last summer. Have you ever built a
nything
before?
Some friendly advice: Seek out the afforementioned RV guys up your way, get a
tour and talk and then maybe go to a fly-in or two and look there, you'll see
a bunch of them. If you still feel the same way, then by all means press ahead.
If nobody up there will take you up, give me a call.
Good Luck!

Dear Listers,
This is vaguely RV4 related so I will be as brief . I recently returned from
Iraq where I was flying combat missions in the F16C, Alabama ANG, my second deployment
there in as many years. I had the priviledge to support the brave young
soldiers and Marines in the two "bad neighborhoods" (Fallujah and Baghdad).
24/7 Night and day missions. Our taskings were long, Six hour missions (occasionally
10 hours) with 4 or 5 refuelings. Our missions were mainly patrols over
the entire country of Iraq performing "On-Call Close Air Support" when the kids
on the ground got in a bind. We dropped bombs where needed, with amazing precision,
thanks to modern GPS technology. We carried A-A missilies just in case
they needed us for Air Defense. I was proud of our guys, six of them RV owners
and pilots. My wingman flies B-17's in his other job...Overall, I am still
thankful I get to fly such a wonderful jet fighter at my age..ha!
Mainly I wanted to say thanks to all the listers and RV folks who took time to
write me encouraging emails, posts and thoughts. It is good to be home...and flying
my RV4...

Rob,
Thanks for the Van's Airforce pointer. I just found a number of RV-4s in
the general vicinity. Hopefully I can connect with one.
My experience is nothing like yours. Welcome home!!!
I am a pilot with 200 hours (that's very little) going on 50 hours in a
Citabria.
I am still learning to fly, and expect I always will be learning...
I am capable but conservative, and far from expert. I know that I will not
solo an RV-4, or any other plane, before becoming comfortable in that plane
with an instructor teaching me the ropes. Insurance requires 10+ hours in
type before insuring me in the RVs. I wouldn't solo before that, and not
at all until I felt comfortable (or perhaps until my CFI felt comfortable)
that I could safely fly. Then I would continue to practice a lot and fly
with an instructor on less favorable days.
I will work hard to keep myself, and my plane safe and happy and off of the
NTSB lists.
From the building side I'd consider myself mechanically inclined. I've
spent time taking cars apart and putting them back together, similar
experiences with radios, TVs and such. I am also fortunate to have friends
in the area building RV-7As. I realize that with time requirements
building my own would be a very long-term project. Someday I will start,
and plan for slow progress. Today I'll help my friends and learn the ropes
before starting my own.
I'd like to learn to fly the RV-4 and work at becoming a proficient RV-4 pilot.
I'd like to make trips to Florida to visit you for lunch! ;-)
Thanks for your advice, more is definitely appreciated!
