--> RV4-List message posted by: Bill French <wrfrench@cogeco.ca> Hi, Folks, I'm new to the list and have searched the archives to no avail. I've seen two pictures of RV-4s with raised rear turtledecks - one by Dave Anders and another which I wasn't able to get the N number. Does any one have info on this mod and is it something that is regularly done? What would be the benefits other than aesthetically pleasing? Bill French

--> RV4-List message posted by: LessDragProd@aol.com Hi Bill, The Turtledeck on the RV-4 is the standard configuration for the aft fuselage on the Harmon Rocket II. All of the Harmon Rocket II fuselage parts from the passenger seatback bulkhead to the rear bulkhead are RV-4 parts, except the top skin. The top of the RV-4 fuselage bulkheads are cut off, the HR2 top bulkhead pieces are added in with the new top skin. (Ask me how I know. :-) ) The RV-4 canopy frame can be modified at the rear to fit the new Turtledeck. I don't know if anything needs to be done for the RV-4 canopy to fit to the Turtledeck. The Turtledeck bulkheads and top skin can be purchased from John Harmon. (661) 836-1028. I'm sure he can give you additional information on the canopy and canopy frame. (I believe the green RV-4 with the Turtledeck is based at Bakersfield, near John's shop.) The real advantage of the mod is less drag. The bubble canopy was developed during W.W.II for better all around visibility, regardless of the extra drag. If you doubt this statement, just look at the canopy modifications on the fastest P-51D's that race at Reno. Regards, Jim Ayers Less Drag Products, Inc.
