What's your flight experience? Have you any Taildragger time? (do you like gladiator movies...just kidding..ha!) The RV4 is the single best compromise civilian sportplane I have flown. Absolutely the biggest bang for the buck and you won't find anything that compares, aside from the RV3. The newer RV's are way more expensive and heavier and just don't fly the same. Go to Doug Reeves website www.vansairforce.net and go to the RV builders log on the left side. It has a list of all the RV dudes in your area. Your local EAA chapter will also have info on them. You might even have one closeby. Good luck! Is there any finished RV-4's around central Illinois? Would like to set in one and maybe go for a ride. Looks like a great airplane.. We have a finished RV-4 in Western Arkansas but it is kinda far from Illinois. It wouldn't be real far to fly but I am out of medical and not flying at the present time. The Rv-4 is the most fun plane I have flown in more than 8,000 hours of ASEL, including gliders. We have built two of them with 150 HP and wood prop. It makes a light and agile short field plane with very good cruise speed too. We have an 1100' grass strip on our farm and it is plenty of room for the RV-4. There just isn't anything comparable to it. Since flying more than 750 hrs. in the RV-4 ; everything else seems like a dog. Bob Olds RV-4 , N1191X A&P , EAA Tech.
