Glenn, Let's put it this way, the old round dials need back up EFIS panels more
than the reverse. I fly for Southwest Airlines and our new 737-700 uses all glass
EFIS displays. In the past 5 years since we started buying the -700 our maintenence
costs on instrument repairs have been cut to 1/10!! They never break.
I use a Tru-Trak Electronic T&B in my RV4 and it is flawless, an electronic
round dial! My neighbor has a Dynon EFIS and it too works extermely well.Even
the F16 with it's old round dials is software upgradedable to EFIS.
EFIS is the future...

Greetings Fellow RV's,
I'm planning a panel upgrade sometime this summer and have intended to use analog
airspeed, turn coordinator and altimeter as back up. But I have also seen many
electric panels w/o any of the backup instruments I had planned and have been
questioned about doing so. Are the electronic flight displays so reliable
that back up is not really necessary? I have no experience with these units. My
thoughts were related to alternator failure or some kind of EFIS malfunction.
Please tell me about your experience/opinions on this.
Thanks,
Glenn
