Steve: The manual trim works just fine. The only minor irritation is when my
pivot bolt loosens over time, allowing the trim tab to move when in the
extreme up or down position. A periodic tightening fixes all that.

Steve, Put in rear seat footwells, skip the pedals. You can make tabs that connect
to the cables that work as well with no drilling...

Sorry guys, another question in the same vein.
I am in a quandary as to whether to order rear rudder pedals. My normal co-pilot
will not want them, and without them she will have more room, and the aircraft
will be lighter. However I would hate to build an aircraft which one day would
not sell because they were missing. Is retrofitting the rudder pedals as easy
as drilling some holes and bolting them in, or is there a gotcha? Presumably
the cables are different because they have a joint at the rear pedals?

Steve...................I have them in my -4...I have noticed that most people
in the rear seat never use them...They are necessary if they plan to land from
the back seat...However, I don't recommend that, because in the flare you can't
see much, and with a whisper of x-wind it will probably be a "harry" landing.
They do interfere with placing maps approach plates and etc. on either side of
your seat...I have the "indented," or "lowered" floor for the GIB for comfort
on long trips.
The kit has a long shaft that connects the rear pedals with your outside flange
of the forward pedals...I don't remember the dia. of the hole you have to drill
in your bulkhead to pass the rod through to the fwd pedals, but your instructions
should have all that info.
My -4 seems to always need right rudder for cruise, so I rigged a spring and a
turnbuckle on the right shaft, so it will hold right rudder trim on long trips...If
you forget to disconnect before landing, the spring will allow you to use
the rudders without any "hard" force.
Some guys who have lost their license or medical are able to have friends who are
legal to fly ride with them to make it all legal for the Feds. so in that scenario,
the rear pedals are required.

Steve,
I believe you will find that the majority of -4s have no provision for rear
seat rudder pedals. I presume this means that the market accepts that as the
norm. My vote is that unless you have an actual need for them, leave them
out. Disadvantages include more weight, more complexity and more clutter.
The cockpit is tight enough as is! If you decide to add them later, I would
think the most difficult part would be threading the new shorter cable
through the tailcone, and even that doesn't appear overly onerous.
