Arvil - I was interested to read a post you made on the web some time ago.
" .......I have a 900 foot strip in north west fla.
that is down hill 3 drgees with 60 foot trees at the end of the runnway , using
a 50mph. approch speed again with a little power an RV-4 using manual flaps
can land in 450 feet with only a little braking and the flaps dumped at tuch
down........"
I currently fly a Supercub and an RV9A in and out of 1020' beside my home in the
UK. I am close to ordering an RV4 kit (and selling the -9A). I have been worrying
about the distance the -4 needs to land and getting conflicting messages.
Realistically what do you think it stalls at solo and gross with a trickle of
power? Also do you fly with a c/s or f/p prop. If f/p how low is the tickover?
I have to carry a couple of knots extra on approach sometimes because I have
to come between trees which give quite a bit of turbulence in the cross wind
- its better in winter when the leaves are gone. Other than the trees I have
to come between it is a good approach, but again a wall of trees at the far end.
Finally, you seemed to be giving a lot of credit to the manual flaps. Did you really
mean that or are you just pointing out that it is even better which I agree
with.
Thanks, Steve.

Steve,
I prefer the manual flaps, but there is nothing wrong with the electric flaps they
go up and down at a good rate of travel, and some pilots prefer the elec.
flaps on the RV-4 because it gives the passenger a lot more foot room when using
the foot wells,
the main resion I prefer the manual flaps over the elec. is i can control the flaps
by feel and I dont have to worry about weather the flap motor is going to
work if Iam landing in a short strip Iam not use to.
If you are using a cruise prop it may carry a little more speed on landing but
only a little
