If you own or are considering the Lasar Ignition System for your airplane,
read this and beware. Lasar Ignition came on my new Lycoming Engine from the
factory. A screw on the distributor cap backed out of my left magneto and it
took 364 hours of working back and forth to destroy the magneto. Unisons
service manual doesn't even have you look at the points until 500 hours.
After sending him pictures of the Magneto, the Service Representative at
Unison said that it was beyond the warranty period and couldn't possibility
be a manufacturing defect and they wouldn't pay for anything.
This all started with a 300+ mag drop on the Left Magneto. While looking for
the cause of the Mag drop, I removed the ignition lead caps and found the
left magneto distributor cap moving up and down. Danny King and I took the
magneto apart and found that one of the screws on the distributor had backed
out and had been working in the hole in the case. There was plastic, carbon,
and aluminum dust all over in the magneto.
Lessons learned:
Unison doesn't stand behind their top of the line Ignition System.
None of their dealers stock the 4771 magneto meaning minimum of 3 weeks to
get one.
The only way you can get one sooner is say A.O.G. and the distributor can
have it drop shipped from the factory overnight for another $45.
Aircraft Spruce had the lowest price of $601 plus $150 core charge.
I have bought my last Unison Product. If anything else goes wrong with the
Lasar system, I will remove it from the airplane and install P-Mags. A P-Mag
system is less than half the cost of the Lasar system and being a new
company, I'll bet you they would be very interested in a premature failure
of one of their components.

I can't speak to the reliability or benefits of the E-Mag/P-Mag. We
aren't against electronic ignition, if it works. Right now, we still
favor traditional mags over any electronic ignition. Monty is very
vocal (as some of you know) about his position on the existing
electronic ignition systems.
We spoke to the folks at E-Mag Air yesterday. Getting the system is the
trick. They are currently producing a lot of 100 systems that are all
sold. What I gathered from the conversation was if you are want a set of
emags, you should order immediately for mid-December delivery. They did
not give us a production date for the next lot except to say sometime in
2006.

Help me Rhonda!...(I know you've never heard that)
Sorry to hear of your adventures with Klaus' system. However, I would like to
put in a plug for my current ignition, the Electroair designed by Jeff Rose.
I have over 1000 safe hours on it now in my 0-320 powered RV4 with greatly improved
performance over jurrasic magnetos. I use one Bendix mag and Jeff's sending
unit in the right mag hole. I use automotive spark plugs without adapters
(Autolite 386) with no mag drop when the mag is switched off.
Jeff sold the business to a guy in MI who took Jeffs' latest improved circuitry design and brought it to production. You can buy them new from Electroair, just like mine except better. Go to www.electroair.net and take a look, or call them at 248-666-3002.
Don't downplay Electronic Ignitions until you see or try Jeff's design.

Ron;
I retract using Klaus Saviers name in conjunction with Unison, my bad. Klaus'
system is Lightspeed Ignition, another fine EI system similar to my Electroair.
After extensive flight with my RV4 (electroair) and my friends RV8(lightspeed)
I can tell you of HP increases, fuel burn decreases and very clean plugs. The
only dirty plugs are the ones hooked to the mag. Take a look at both systems,
get your money back from Unison, get a good rebuilt used Bendix and install
either of the two above mentioned EI systems on the other side (I like the electroair)
and you will absolutely love either one!
Good Luck!
