Is everyone using the 44-NSR (plastic) brake lines per plans? Just puzzling 'cos
this is done in aluminium in later VANS designs. Is there a reason why plastic
on the -4?

I flew one with plastic lines for 7 years. Stuff in the rv-list archives
indicates that Van may have changed due to a few people melting the
plastic lines with extreme braking. Nothing documents whether this
happened on a single landing or after repeated high speed taxi runs
which will overheat brakes much more than one stop. An intermediate fix
by some was to use 6" to 8" of aluminum line at the caliper, followed by
the plastic lines. (It's perhaps worth pointing out that a few VeriEze
drivers have actually melted/burned wheel pants with braking, but people
still use FG pants.)
A friend of mine (& a few others over the years) had a failure of the
aluminum line on his -6A a few months ago. A section around 1/2 the
circumference of the tube & about 1" long blew out on the outside of the
big stress-relieving loop around the axle. There is now a 'movement' on
the rv-list to convert from aluminum to automotive teflon/stainless
braid hoses.

I started with aluminum on my -4 then went to Summit Racing and
purchased steel braded brakes lines. They work excellent and I no
longer have to worry about them cracking....
