My name is Earl Fortner and I belong to Chapter 309. We had an RV-6
project the chapter built from scratch and were trying to raise funds to
get an
engine to install. Along the way we found the EAA will not let a Chapter
own a flying RV-6. I suspose liability is the problem. It was either
sell it to
a group that belonged to the local Chapter or put it on the market. A
vote was taken to sell it. It was advertised on Ebay and was sold in
about one week.
The Chapter received more for it than they had expected. You can always
put a reserve price on it to make sure it does not sell for less than
you want.
I have been working on an RV4 for about 11 years. I have it on the gear
and have an 0-320 engine hanging on the front. Several years ago I got
hungup
on making fairings for the canopy. I was unable to get any help with my
fairing and got very disgusted after I ruined the third set trying to
get it right.
I now have a fourth set and will live with it right or wrong when I
start working on it again.
Cheers, Earl Fortner, Harrisburg, NC

Earl,
Thanks for the advice.
Our Chapter has built two previous aircraft.
A Mini-Max and a Sonex.
The (complete and flying) Mini was sold and what little profit there was was
put in the treasury. The Sonex was "pre-bought" by one of the members but
was assembled by the Chapter. If you were at OSH this past year you may
have seen it as it was one of the featured projects setting directly in
front of the homebuilders building and it flew several times. I don't
recall either one being a problem with National; however, I don't know that
we ever asked either.
:-)
Our other three projects are also "pre-bought". The future owner buys any
kit / material and the chapter does the assembly. This seems to have turned
into a win / win situation.
Regarding the RV-4 that was given to us, on the advice of council, a
separate fund / account was established for both monies used on the project
and / or the scholarship.
Good luck with your -4. I myself think it's a great plane.
Our project is going to be a great head start kit for someone who wants to
build a -4. We don't need to get top dollar for our project; however, any
dollar we don't get is one less dollar for a future recipient.
Have received several good responses from this group.
Thanks and I will let you all know how things turn out.
