--> RV4-List message posted by: Lee Logan <leeloganster@gmail.com> For the record and before we scare off future RV-4 wannabees, my -4 is quite comfortable on the floor and behind (the pilot's side) of the firewall. I don't have any additional insulation whatever (bare firewall and bare floor). Mine is a slightly "pumped up" IO-360 with a crossover exhaust and slightly down-turned exhaust pipes. See pix, below (the tufts were from an effort to visualize airflow over my bird). You can see my pipes in the bottom view but they don't extend out so far that they are visible in the side photo). Regards, Lee...

--> RV4-List message posted by: "Gene Smith" <esmith6@satx.rr.com> Rob Ray................A few weeks ago you wrote a glowing report on how wonderful the 4 pipe straights were on an RV-4, and now you tell us there is a heat problem?..I ordered the 4 pipes from Vetterman to replace my Allen Tolle x-overs...What area can I expect to see blistering paint?..Logic would dictate just prior to the exit area? I always enjoy your inputs to this list, and the Engines List...You are our guru, and we appreciate your efforts, you are by far the expert on the -4 and most engines...Please in the future paint (no pun) both sides of a situation...Most of us out here aren't as skilled or knowledgeable as you are, and look for any avenue of info to guide us properly. You do a wonderful job, please don't stop, and please don't take offense to this observation..............CHEERS!!!!

--> RV4-List message posted by: Oldsfolks@aol.com In the early days of the RV-4,a friend started the engine in his RV-4 and thought his engine was going to fly apart. He had the John Harmon early pipes with no turn-down tips. He discovered that the exhaust was the problem, with the impulses against the floor making all the noise. He added turn-down tips and all was OK. I had the same thing on our first RV-4 but I knew of his problem and put the tips on right away. I wore tan soft rubber soled shoes and most of Van's group did also. The rear edge of everyones heels were melted at about a 45 degree angle from the heat on the floor with the straight-out pipes.
