Wally, You are correct sir. In comparison with my whip antenna, the copper strip
performed equally as well in comm tests with controlling agencies. Wingtip antennas
are effective also and completely hidden. The best part is the clean lines
of the RV4 unspoiled by antennas (and the drag they produce)...

Jerry,
What Rob is talking about, I assume, is mounting the copper strip to the wood
gear leg stiffener. At least that is what I plan to do. Antennas are or were
$7 from Van's. I plan to put one on each gear leg stiffener. I have also mounted
an antenna doubler plate mid point abut 10 inches behind the firewall just
in case I ever want to add the whip antenna.
I am based at Cottonwood Airport, NW side of Rockford. After the snow clears,
drop in sometime. Of course, you can drive in anytime.
Happy Flying Safely,

Subject: Re: RV4-List: TRANSPONDER ANTENNAS
Hi Rob ...
Can you please expand on the comm antenna in the left gear leg? It
obviously had to be a straight whip. How did you fasten it to the
structure of the leg, how did you ground the antenna mount? How close
to the fuselage was the base of the antenna? How long was the antenna?
How did you prevent the whip part of the ant from touching the gear leg
and grounding out. Is the comm antenna still inside the fairing and
working good? This really blows holes in the idea that comm antennas
need a flat ground plane. Sorry for so many questions.
Thanks for your answers ...
Jerry
