I am putting the rear seat frame together, and puzzling how the weight
of the pax leaning back in it is to be taken by the bulkhead. Is the
intent that the point contact of the side channels to the bulkhead is
the mechanism? It appears a bit crude!
Thanks, Steve.

Check Van's website.
There is a Service Bulletin (SB 97-05-1), which addresses this very issue.
The SB entails installing angles, (or gussets), between the rear
seat/baggage bulkhead, and the longerons.

Steve,
If you restrict your back seat usage to petite, cute girls, you will never have
a problem... :)

Derek - Thanks. Yes, I have read the SB but think that relates to the steel
bracket supporting the bulkhead itself. I have those installed. What I am
puzzling about is the fact that on the front side of the bulkhead the
contact is with the sharp edge of the seat frame. I have put a couple of
pictures

on my blog to try and make my concern clearer. Am I misunderstanding
something?
Cheers, Steve
Smokey, A portfolio of cute girls are largly out for me, (I would probably
find half my spar bolts missing) but I trust a cute wife at 112lbs is OK?
Still would like to build the thing right though!

Hi Steve,
You have it right. I trimmed the side rails to match the angle they at witch they
meet the bulkhead. I'm thinking about adding a "wedge" of plastic as well
to distribute the load.

Steve,
As another builder mentioned, trim the side channel to match the bulkhead.
However, keep this in mind, most of the load and contact surface is borne
by the to half of the seat back, the fiberglass portioned,, and should be
drilled in assembly to match the correct seatback to bulkhead angle.
If drilled properly, the entire fiberglass flange should rest against the
bulkhead, and only the top portion of the side angle should make contact,
below the fiberglass.
It's would be best to "dry fit" the fiberglass to the seat back, and place
in against the bulkhead in order to eyeball the correct angle on the side
rail.
