Roger.
I recently installed mine at the leading edge of the wingtips, not in
the plastic. It was fairly easy. It seems one would have to remove
the tank to install them adjacent to the tank to put them in as
easily. Shorter wires seem to be the only advantage near the tank. It
would also be more difficult to service them inboard, at least if you
make the wingtips removable with screws.

Rodger,
I would not mount the landing light very far inboard of the tip without consulting
Van's Aircraft first. Many cantilever wings' torsion resistant strength
is based on the "D" section formed by the main spar and the leading edge skin.
Since there is no, or very little, torque at the tip of the wing, it is the
most likely place for a cut-out in the leading edge skin. Van's Aircraft can
tell you if a cut-out near the tank, as you considered, would adversely effect
the wing strength. Personally, I would not make a cut-out there.
