After laying out my panel in the aircraft and temporarily installing
instruments, I removed it, worked on it separately and installed my
instruments. Only when I put the panel in the aircraft did I discover
this problem.
I exchanged my turn coordinator for a navaid autopilot that goes in
the same location and has turn coordinator function. My RV-6 is a tip
up canopy version and has a second bulkhead behind and close to the
panel. The housing of the auto pilot is deeper than the space between
the panel and the bulkhead. The autopilot did not fit. This could be
remedied by cutting a port through the bulkhead, but there is also a
structural member that slants in from the side wall to prevent this.
I do not want to move the turn coordinator to a non standard
location, interfering with my instrument scan. It appears that my
only option is to build a one inch projection out from the face of
panel for the unit. Has any one had this problem and solved it a
better way?
I will be calling Navaid to see if they have a shorter unit or
separated components after the holiday break.

Do you six 3 1/8" holes or eight?
We have eight, with a turn coordinator AND the NAVAID. The NAVAID is in the
bottom right corner of the eight holes.
Cutting the "extension hole" is a lot more feasible a bit more to the right.
Of course, I know you don't want to hear this but you could in fact
"re-layout" the panel in a manner that has space for eight 3 1/8" + three 2
1/4" + radio stack + nine 2 1/4". It was a challenge but we were able to do
it (also with little air vents on the side. There is though a little
sub-panel for switches etc.
The plane is an RV6 tipup. If you want I can send (off-list) a picture of
the layout.

Cut the interfering metal and then use angle to brace it back up.
