AC 43.13 has torque specs for AN, MS, and NAS bolts. You should use those for "rigid" joints, i.e. joints where play isn't designed into the joint. A rod-end joint would be an example of a "rigid" joint, whereas a hinge where the bolt acts a pivot wouldn't. When the joint isn't "rigid," the nut on the bolt has to be secured by some positive method such as a cotter pin. Two really good references on bolts (and other hardware) are John Schwaner's "Sky Ranch Engineering Manual" and Carroll Smith's "Nuts, Bolts, Fasteners and Plumbing Handbook." Tedd McHenry Surrey, BC
