Ken, I had somewhat the same concerns that you described below--
a RV-6A with the KX-125 COM/NAV/LOC that can be coupled to
my S-TEC 30 autopilot (with altitude hold). The S-TEC 30 alternatively
can be coupled to my panel-mounted Northstar GPS-60 by throwing
a switch. I too worried about a single NAV and COM while flying IFR.
I also missed having vertical guidance on ILS approaches and Marker
beacons, although Mkrs are being removed at many airports.
My solution was to add a VAL 422-INS to my panel. The TSO'd
VAL 422-INS provides VOR Nav, Localizer, Glideslope and a 3-light
Marker Beacon receiver, plus the light-bar cross pointer indicators,
and it all fits into one 3-1/4 inch instrument hole.
I used a Comant diplexor to hook the NAV antenna to both radios.
I put a "boat" marker antenna between the gear legs and a Comant
CI-104 Glideslope Antenna mounted inverted on the right wing's
bell-crank inspection plate under the wing.
(I first tried using a Comant tri-plexor which takes 1 Nav input and
provides output signals for 2 VOR's and 1 Glideslope. With that setup
I found the glideslope "needle" to be erratic on approaches due,
probably, to prop-modulation of the 332 MHz glideslope signal.
In any case, going to a separate GS antenna, mounted where it isn't
looking through the propeller arc, solved the problem.)
My backup COM is a Garmin GPSCOM-190 handheld transceiver.
It is connectable to an exterior COM antenna and it also provides
a moving map display, backing up the GPS-295 mounted below the
panel between my legs. I also use it enroute for listening to ATIS,
talking to Flightwatch, etc., leaving the KX-125 receiver on Center.
FWIW, this works well for me. If you would like further information,
contact me off list.

Hi Folks:
Hopefully I'm not breaking protocol by posting here.. I have a 5
year old
RV-6 which I bought from him a year ago and which I really love to
fly.
My question to the group is this: The airplane has a kx-125 nav/com
(with integral indicator), a RST audio panel, and a hand-held GPS
coupled to a Navaid autopilot.
For VFR flying the airplane is just about perfect the way it is.
Never content to leave things as they are, I'd like to start working
on an instrument rating, and would like to do it in my airplane.
I've read all of the threads regarding IFR training in RV's, and have
convinced myself that I can do it in mine.
My problem is in putting a 'sensible' amount of avionics in the
airplane to fulfill my mission. Beyond training for my IFR rating,
I expect the most IFR flying I will do is punching up through the
fog on the way out of the bay area, and occasionally following an
ILS down when I misread the weather at my destination.
I have been deliberating between 3 scenarios and would appreciate
some feedback on which makes the most sense to those of you who are
flying with different flavors of these...

I am planning a trip to St.Louis in September for five days and staying at the
Adam Mark hotel. Anyone have a suggestion for an RV-6 friendly airfield with
Transportation to the hotel? gene williams
