My FAA representative and our FAA DAR (who is a homebuilder, too!) has told me that it is not sufficient to follow all the rules; instead, an FAA rep or DAR needs to positively approve it. If the instrument avionics are not TSO'ed or equivalent, then they will not sign off on it. Period. Without the FAA positive approval, even if you do not violate any FAA regs, you cannot fly IFR. I think the FAA inspectors/DAR do not want to risk their jobs, and there is no specific instruction to them that non TSO'ed instruments are ok in experimentals, so they just refuse. If you can find one FAA inspector/DAR who is willing to sign off e.g., a bluemountainavionics EFIS for IFR use, then please let me know. Sincerely, Noel Simmons ________________________________ Message 2 _____________________________________ Time: 12:26:10 PM PST US From: "Vern Darley,II" Subject: RV6-List: Flight instrument and brake plumbing --> RV6-List message posted by: "Vern Darley,II" Any opinions and recommendations on the best material-tubing and fittings -for plumbing flight instruments and brakes? ________________________________ Message 3 _____________________________________ Time: 04:41:24 PM PST US From: ArwPlne@aol.com Subject: RV6-List: KC need sliding canopy in Fla --> RV6-List message posted by: ArwPlne@aol.com Anyone know where I can get the the whole assembly or the glass??/...I know what Van wants, though Id try this first....KC ________________________________ Message 4 _____________________________________ Time: 05:54:48 PM PST US From: "Ralph E. Capen" For the pitot/static system in the removable panel in my 6A, I used aluminum and AN4 fittings to the final fitting on the bulkhead fwd of the panel and poly tubing around the back to the static fittings. I needed those little aluminum gaskets to seal the AN4 37 degree fittings and teflon thread sealant/lube on the fittings that go in to the instruments. I've tested it virtually to 20,000' and I get a leakdown of about 250'/hr and you're allowed 100'/min so I think I'm good to go. Planning on all aluminum for the brakes from the place where the rubber hoses (supplied with the finish kit) attach at the firewall all the way down to the calipers. I'm building a 6A so if yours isn't an A the brake lines go through the firewall then down instead of back to the wing-spar and down. Pictures of the static plumbing if you want 'em....contact me directly.
