I'm planning to put an eggenfellner subie engine in my 8a. They tell me to
      order a the cowlings from a 9.

The RV-7 and RV-9 fuselages are identical Konrad. Thats how Van's keeps his
prices (and inventory) so low. In case you didn't realize it, the RV-7 is
an RV-9 fuselage mated to the aerobatic wings and tail of the RV-8. I
suspect the RV-6 fuselage is also the same dimensions at the firewall so a
-6 cowl should fit on the -7 and -9. It's the wing mounting structure and
Vee shaped forward fuselage bottom that are different on the RV-6 (RV-7/9
fuselages have a flat bottom under the wing spar carry through structure)...
along with a few other subtle changes that make the RV-7 and 9 parts able to
be designed on CAD and punched out on the CNC punch machine.

      Dear Dean,
Thank you for your reply. The reason for me asking my question was to find out
if a Sam James Cowling designed for a RV-6 would also fit the RV-7 or RV-9 Series.
The following is a correspondence with Vans Support about the subject (as
      inquired by Matthew Brandes):

      >>Konrad... here is a message from Van's. I was asking because I am considering
      the Sam James cowl.

      >Matthew,
The RV-6,7,9 all have the same firewall. There are differences in
the cowl bottoms depending on engines. In most cases, the -6
      cowl will fit the -9.

      Charles,
Who are "they" that told you that?
You may have to do some slight rework on any SBS (-6,-7,-9) cowling if you want
it to fit on to an -8(a).
But then I might be wrong?
