They tell me to order a the cowlings from a 9. Thats how Van's keeps his prices (and inventory) so low. In case you didn't realize it, the RV-7 is an RV-9 fuselage mated to the aerobatic wings and tail of the RV-8. I suspect the RV-6 fuselage is also the same dimensions at the firewall so a -6 cowl should fit on the -7 and -9. It's the wing mounting structure and Vee shaped forward fuselage bottom that are different on the RV-6 (RV-7/9 fuselages have a flat bottom under the wing spar carry through structure)... along with a few other subtle changes that make the RV-7 and 9 parts able to be designed on CAD and punched out on the CNC punch machine. The reason for me asking my question was to find out if a Sam James Cowling designed for a RV-6 would also fit the RV-7 or RV-9 Series. The following is a correspondence with Vans Support about the subject (as inquired by Matthew Brandes): >>Konrad... here is a message from Van's. I was asking because I am considering the Sam James cowl. >Matthew, The RV-6,7,9 all have the same firewall. There are differences in the cowl bottoms depending on engines. In most cases, the -6 cowl will fit the -9. You may have to do some slight rework on any SBS (-6,-7,-9) cowling if you want it to fit on to an -8(a). But then I might be wrong?
