This goes back to differences in the basic wing structure. The -6 wing spars
extent to the centre line of the aircraft and mate there with splice plates,
etc. Thus, due to the wing dihedral  angle, the fuselage bottom has to have
a vee shape to accommodate the spars with minimum waste space.
The -7, -8, -9 all use a three part spar with a centre section and left and
right joins just at the fuselage side. The centre section can be made
straight and so the fuselage bottom can be built flat.

I think Vans should be commended for some clever design and parts
standardization to keep inventory and costs down. This plus the introduction
of CNC manufacturing is what makes the newer RV kits such an outstanding
value while still allowing Vans to make a decent profit (at least I hope he
is). Thus we all benefit.
