Larry, The last batch of 6-6a's that went out had the -7 tail. I have one but haven't flown it yet. Apparently it's not a W&B issue, or I don't think Van's would have done it this way. I doubt if it's more than a half pound heavier. I also am partners in a -6a with the small tail, and first thing I noticed when I started flying it was the tail wag in turb. Over time, I learned to ignore it, but then got to fly a -7a with the tall tail and immediately noticed the lack of wag. Also hard to slip with the short tail, although I don't know about the tall one in that regard. Cheers, Jerry Cochran Wilsonville, OR In a message dated 12/16/2005 12:09:46 A.M. How about spin entry and recovery? Is there anyone who has a comparison between the two different tails on the 6? Due to varying opinions, especially Van's, I've yet to enter a spin in my 6, but if it is significantly more predictable/less violent with the 7 tail feathers, I will purchase the 7 tail feathers. Thanks! Steve Weidler

Hi Guys, I'm one of the only few I know about that have the new very large RV7/9 tail on an RV6. You can see some pictures that compare them at http://www.steinair.com/tails.htm. There are people who've changed the vertical stab and rudder...I think Jerry Springer had to do that because of some "unfortuneate incident"...maybe he'll join in here. It's a complete RV-7 Tail kit that I built and installed on the RV-6. Indeed it does weight quite a lot more than the -6 tail/empennage. On the white airplane I originally had a -320 with a FP sensenich. Well....it was wayyyyy to tail heavy so I'm in the process of installing a -360 and C/S Hartzell. I didn't weigh all the parts, but the lead on the elevators is different, the lead in the rudder is several added pounds, along with that huge rudder being nearly twice the surface area. That being said, it does make quite a difference in Xwinds, and now you can really slip the thing in. Also gone is the tail wag on my other RV. Anyway, if you're thinking of using that huge tail with a -320 and FP prop, you'll have basically no baggage use. With the -360 and C/S prop you'll be back to having some usable baggage. Just my 2 cents as usual! Cheers, Stein. -----Original Message----- From: owner-rv6-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-rv6-list-server@matronics.com]On Behalf Of Jerry2DT@aol.com Sent: Friday, December 16, 2005 3:21 PM To: rv6-list@matronics.com Subject: RV6-List: Re:New Tail Larry, The last batch of 6-6a's that went out had the -7 tail. I don't believe that Van's recomends spins. My 6A with the counterbalance tail certainly flys different than small tail. I have a partially assembled counterbalance tail (empennage) for sale real cheap. I ended up with 2 when I built. --> RV6-List message posted by: Tedd McHenry <tedd@vansairforce.org> I appreciate the desire for caution, but the question of -6 and -7 spin characteristics is probably getting a lot more attention than it deserves. Van's latest word on the subject is Service Bulletin 02-6-1, which is available at http://www.vansaircraft.com/pdf/sb02-6-1.pdf. In it he says, "We chose to recommend that RV-6 pilots concentrate on learning spin recognition, immediate recovery, and spin avoidance rather than encouraging them to explore the limits of spin recoverability. We also recommended that the RV-6 not be used for recreational spins. Section 15 of the RV-6 Construction Manual details spin testing, spin recovery techniques, and spin limitation recommendations for pilots." Section 15 of the RV-6 construction manual says, "For the pilot anticipating aerobatic use of his RV-6, this will include stall entries from steep pitch angles and banks, and accelerated stalls from similar attidudes. Similarly, spins should be practiced from various entry attitudes and power settings. Obviously, initial spin testing should be done with the airplane loaded to a forward C.G. and entry attitudes should be moderate. With satisfactory recovery, loading and entry attidudes can be increased to anticipated limits." Clearly, Van is not recommending never spinning the RV-6. To the contrary, he specifically recommends spin testing for builders who plan on aerobatics, and provides some detail on how to accomplish it. Van also says that, with the larger tail, "RV-7 spin recovery qualities are equal to or better than those of the standard RV-6/6A, which have been service proven through fleet experience."
