I am about 85% done with my 6/A and have been thinking about where I am going to base this aircraft. With the hangar rents going through the roof I think I want to base it at a local grass strip. So my concern is that the nosewheel / engine mount assy, like most tri gear aircraft is not up to the task of a soft field use. My question is: Has anybody converted a 6/A to a 6? Can it be done? How difficult is it? What do you need to modify or change? Any feedback would greatly be appreciated! Thank you! I fly mine in and out of=C2-well maintained grass strips and find proper technique is whats key. =C2-=C2-=C2-=C2-=C2-=C2-=C2-1)=C2- Keep the stick back as m uch as possible and land it as if it were a tail dragger.......on the mains . =C2-=C2-=C2-=C2-=C2-=C2- 2) Once the nose wheel touches during roll out apply slow steady back pressure to keep the nose weight as light a s you can without pulling =C2-=C2-=C2-=C2-=C2-=C2-=C2-=C2-=C2-=C2- it off the tur f. =C2-=C2-=C2-=C2-=C2- 3) A good instructor would=C2-recommend=C2 -this technique when fling out of grass strips=C2-regardless of the bra nd of nose dragger. KEEP the Nose =C2-=C2-=C2-=C2-=C2-=C2-=C2-=C2- Wheel LIGHT! Reasons in my mind to keep the RV6-A approach? =C2-1) Lower insurance rates. =C2-2) Bigger market if you sell. =C2-3) IF....You are a low time pilot the RV6-A will allow you to fly=C2 -on more days with high winds. =C2-=C2-=C2-=C2- By now you have probably guessed I won't be updati ng my nose wheel assembly. You could give them a call and get the specifics on what you would need to change. I agree with Tom though that finishing your 6A might not be a bad plan. Almost all the factory demo flights were flown off grass in the past. Along about the time I finished the tail feathers I completed tail dragger training and got a ta il wheel endorsement. After accumulating 45 hrs. of conventional gear flyin g in Champs I decided I would rather have a nose dragger and bypass the add itional aggravation during ground operations ;-}. Anyway when the 6A was finished I had a short rudder. When you order a RV6 kit from Van the rudder comes short for tail spring clearance. If you buil t a tail for a 6A, you could have some interferance. As far as I can tell t hat is the only differance which you might need to be concerned about. Inci dentally, my home field is turf and I haven't had any trouble in 3 years.
