Subject: | Heat and Cowling RV6 |
Thank you for the suggestion I called Vans this morning and will get the
heat shield on, maybe this should be some thing other RV owners should
consider before they have a fiberglass issue as I now do.

John:
Van's sells a self-adhesive foil heat shield material that you can stick on
the inside of the cowl in the area where heat is a factor. Just make sure
you clean the area real well so it will adhere. K2R spot remover does real
well to suck oil out of the pre-preg type epoxy cowls that Vans now supplies
with their kits if that is the type you have. If not, just use naphtha
(coleman's lantern fuel) or lacquer thinner.

RV Group,
I have an RV6, changed the oil today and noticed that the bottom cowling has
a bubble about 6" in diameter next to the exhaust where it makes the bend
from the manifold (closest point to the cowling), obviously the exhaust is
to hot for the cowling at this point, from the out side of the cowling you
can also just see the bubble. This is now a weaker area of the cowling; I
did not build the airplane and am wondering what I should do about the heat
first and then the cowling. The cowling may have been like this since my
last oil change and perhaps will be something I deal with down the road. I
can not imagine this causing a major failure but will probably just become
unsightly to a point where it needs to be fixed. Any feed back is wanted
and welcome.
Thank you,
