HI Konrad,
Well, the evidence seems to be accumulating that they have. More and more of them
are in use in RV's in my area, KLVK, and so far it looks like they may have
worked through those early problems . I remain somewhat cautious but thinking
about starting with one and see how it goes.

I think the early problems are behind them. I have one on my 8A based on
some recommendations of RV pilots I trust that have had no issues in years
of use. I plan to place on eon my -10 when they finally release the 6
cylinder version.
Like most systems I prefer diversity so I would never run two PMags but I
would never run two Light speed either.

Hi Harry,
I think running a P-Mag or one LSE in addition to one Magneto would be
a conservative solution. However, I would feel pretty darn safe behind
DUAL LSE's or P-Mags, as long as they are powered individually...
Electronics have been around for a while, and they can be made nearly
fail safe. Magneto's are certainly not fail safe either. Use

Do they even still make the E-mag, the non self powered version?
I wonder what the performance differences are between E/P-Mags and the
competing LSE- Systems in terms of additional power output as well as
fuel savings?
I wonder if anyone has ever run a single LSE in conjunction with not a
Magneto, but rather an E/P-Mag for two truly redundant electronic
ignitions?
Hmm, I wonder how they would work together, i.e. if both competing EI
systems would be mixed on one engine??? Hmm...?

I was browsing the P-Mag web site this week. They look pretty cool, but the web
site really makes no mention of whether there's any real performance/economy
benefit to them. Does anyone have any real world experience along these lines?
I've got two standard Slick mags on my IO-390. If I dumped $2200 on a pair of
P-Mags, would I really notice any difference? The IO-390 already starts and runs
great. More power and better economy are always welcome, though...

FWIW - I learned something by reading the EmagAir manual. The Pmag, with the built-in alternator, self-powers at all times unless the RPM of the engine falls below the threshold where it can do so. Thus, instead of being concerned about a continuous 1A drain from the power source (battery in the case of an alternator out condition), as long as you are in cruise condition the mags are not a factor. I agree with the 'individually powered' statement, and am adding a small 7AH battery to my system, will power one mag from the main battery and the other from the backup. (see AEC diagrams http://www.aeroelectric.com/PPS/Adobe_Architecture_Pdfs/Z10-8A1.pdfhttp://www.aeroelectric.com/PPS/Adobe_Architecture_Pdfs/Z10-8A2.pdf ) Unfortunately in my case I can't fit a backup alternator/dynamo so will have two batteries and a single alternator.

Well, I guess that speaks for itself about your happiness with the E/P-

Well Matt,
If you want more performance by adding Dual EI's, then you can't
really go wrong with Klaus Savier's LSE-II or -III's, but I do not
know if the P-Mags are performing equally as well in that department.

Phil,
You can't add the little SD-8 alternator (by B&C) on your vacuum pad?
I think that little alternator is just perfect either as a back up.
But then, the SD-8 is actully all that I am planning on using on my
future airplane (which will not have much electric drain either)...
But then, I also plan on a small 5-7AH (Ignition only!) battery just
in case. That should do the trick and is light weight too.

Bummer... but then a small dedicated backup battery will do the trick
to provide enough ignition energy to find a suitable landing spot in
case of a total electrical failure (?). Unless things go really
wrong, remember that you still have the main battery too for that same
purpose ;-)

I will have to check the logs, not absolutely certain. Since I was already sending
the emag for an upgrade to pmag, I decided to send the pmag for a cleaning
and inspection. Good thing I did, Brad found an issue with it that needed
to be addressed (user induced, not a defect). I can't say enough about how nice
he has been to deal with.
I am also switching from aircraft plugs to auto (NGK) plugs, and installing EmagAir's
harness.

How much time was on your P-mag before the rebuild?

Konrad,
I agree with you about electronics but my understanding is that most if not all
of the P-Mag/E-Mag early teething problems were actually mechanical in nature.
I may be wrong.

Hi Harry,
I think running a P-Mag or one LSE in addition to one Magneto would be a conservative
solution. However, I would feel pretty darn safe behind DUAL LSE's or P-Mags,
as long as they are powered individually... Electronics have been around
for a while, and they can be made nearly fail safe. Magneto's are certainly
not fail safe either. Use whatever lets you sleep at night ;-)

As described to me there was a magnet or something held with epoxy that when
the unit became hot moved, shifted or in some way changed the function of
the unit to then fire something like 180 degrees out of phase.
This is how it was described to me.

Dear Harry,
I don't remember anymore what kind of problems they had back then, but
I think they took care of whatever it was by now... There won't be
any progress in life unless there are risk takers who'd go the extra
mile to come up with something new :-)
