Subject: | Hartzell c/s prop info |
Those of you who have this prop may be interested in knowing about Service
Letter HC-SL-61-278. It supersedes older A-2421 (1.500" long) low pitch
stop set screw and B-3359 shear locknut with 102472 (1.736" long) set screw
and A-2043-1 full height locknut. They claim the older affair was reported
as sometimes leaking oil, but leaks would result from worn B6747
Stat-O-Seal under the other non-locking basenut (not shown in Hartzell
Manual Fig 4-1), not the length of the set screw..
My A-2421 set screw fractured upon undoing the shear locknut during
refurbishing of my 27yr old HC-C2YK-1BF/F7666A-4 prop. It turns out that
the fracture occurred in line with the bottom of the hex (Allen) driving
recess, where the set screw is the weakest. It's possible that this was
over torqued at one time. The new length set screw puts the bottom of the
driving recess well clear of the locknut to basenut interface.
The change is an easy one. Just order the parts from Ottosen in AZ. Make
a mark between the root of a prop blade and the hub before removing the old
set screw. Remove both nuts and seal. Back out the old set screw and
replace it with the new one. Then install the new seal, basenut and
locknut. Adjust the set screw until your prop root to hub marks align,
hold the hex wrench while you seat the basenut and torque the locknut to
17ft-lb. You may need to make minor adjustments to achieve the correct low
pitch rpm for your installation.
