I've tried Aircraft Finish Systems Waterborne primer and zinc chromate in spray
cans. Does anyone know why it's important to use "aircraft" primer. What's
the difference between a/c primer and various hardware store primers, such as
automotive primer?

John, John, John,
You have no idea what you're about to start here do you...:) I'll be brief
before I get burnt from all the flame throwers. Many generic "rattle can"
primers are actually NOT corrosion protetors at all, and don't provide even
a modicum of protection unless a top coat is painted over it. Actually, if
people do their research instead of using wives tails, they will find that
there are very few single stage primers that do provide any real corrosion
protection without a top-coat.
That being said, there are a lot of primers that in fact are good corrosion
inhibitors, like most of the 2 part epoxy primers, plain old zinc chromate,
etc.. Now for the flame catcher....Don't use any! Alodine is simpler,
lighter, quicker, yada, yada, yada. I'll stop there before I "re-open" this
pandora's box. Email me off list if you want some un-biased information on
some good primers if you decide to go that way.
Check the Archives for some info(and shouting matches)!
Good luck deciding and put on your flak jacket!
Cheers,
Stein Bruch, Minneapolis
