Scott, my first airplane was of the plastic variety. The tips are epoxy
primer, gel coated and pulled from molds. What you are concerned about is
UV deterioration of the bonds causing delamination. I would scuff them up,
prime with a UV protective primer then final paint.

Are yours not full of pin holes? By the time you've messed with them to
get them looking good, you'll more than likely want to prime them. You
could even use some filler/primer to get rid of any tiny holes. After
spending all this time building a plane, a couple of extra hours priming
the wingtips is pretty insignificant!

My name is Bob Lake and I am building a RV-7 in Austin, Tx. I am very,
very interested in the Dynon system. Why did you decide on the Dynon? Cost?
Do
you have the smaller unit or the larger one? And what about autopilot?
Etc., etc.
I have finished the empennage and am starting on the wings on my RV-7 QB
kit. Going with a slider canopy and am leaning toward an electric IFR panel on
the pilots side with vacuum backup on the copilots' side.
Thanks.

As an experienced painter of fiberglass and metal I can tell you the answer
is yes. The white material is gel coat. On boats you can get away with it
because it is thicker, however, on our planes it is used as a filler and mold
release. You must sand it until it is dull. Use a 400 grit paper or scotchbrite
pad. You do not want to sand through the gel coat, if you do just add a
thicker layer of primer. You may also like to fair the joint between the tip and
the metal surface to make it smoother. If you choose this route then scuff
the metal, lay a strip or two of tape to build up the surface then sand down to
the thickness of the tape. Remove the tape before it cures and lightly sand
to a smooth transition. While sanding the tip add several wide layers of tape
to protect the metal surface while sanding. Begin sanding with 80 grit and
work your way up to 600. Oh, I suggest the marine grade of polyester filler
for the transition but automotive grades work as well.

You may also want to check out Super Fil as a lightweight epoxy based micro
ballon filler, sands great and is designed for airplane use. I will not
shrink. To fill your pinholes, try Smooth Prime. These are both Poly Fiber
products. I only recommend these as they were the best products I found
during my plastic airplane days.

Bob, and the 7 list. I have responded to so many people on private emails
concerning by intent to go fully glass with no vac so I'll lay it out here
for all to attack:-). Dynon only has one size of unit.
Cost was not the determining factor in my decision to go with the Dynon. It
factored in but cost cannot be the only reason. I followed Blue Mountain's
smaller unit but decided against it based on several bad contacts with their
representatives. Plus, it just hasn't worked as advertised. I wanted to
stay away from TSO'd units as I believe the red tape they must adhere to has
restricted them in providing units at a reasonable price and has held them
back from being on the "cutting edge". Dynon provided, for me, a reasonably
priced unit of which was not placed on the market until they had it right.
Not so with Blue Mountain. Grand Rapids, in my mind, is doing it right
also. Their unit is not out yet but I expect it to perform as advertised.
The cost is much more than Dynon but it will do a little more than the
Dynon. Is the cost worth the few extras, not right now in my mind. I have
however, bought their EIS 4000 engine monitering system and will slave it to
their moniter which I have placed directly under my Dynon. Grand Rapids has
been in business for several years and have sold thousands of the engine
monitering systems. By having their moniter, I have the ability to upgrade
to their EFIS system, if I so choose, and is insurance against Dynon being a
long term business venture. I will place the EIS 4000 screen on my panel
also. These two units provide me with a battery backup Dynon EFIS tied to
my switched essential bus with direct feed from my battery. The Grand
Rapids will provide all my engine monitering. I will probably just run it
though the main bus as if all my electrics go to crap, all I do is keep the
engine running, to heck with seeing all the numbers. Just keep the fan
turning. I am coupling my Garmin 430, essential bus, to a Digitrack 2
vertical speed, altitude hold TruTrack autopilot. I also have a handheld
GPS. I am planning on using one of the IPAQ artificial horizons as a backup
to the EFIS. Add to that portable radio. So, for me the alternator has to
go belly up, my battery must blow up, my Dynon internal battery must crap
out, the internal batteries of my IPAQ and handheld GPS must all go out at
the same time for me to "lose it all". Add to that, I must be in IFR. I
figure if all that happens.............see ya!!
I have had a vac. pump, both mags, altimeter, airspeed worked on in the last
four years and replaced the transponder and encoder. Not a great track
record for steam gauges in my book. The Dynon will send gray code to my
digital transponder so I do not have to have an encoder. I do need one for
input for the 430, however. By going glass, I dump the vac. system and all
those heavy, unreliable (in my book) steam gauges and have a very efficeint
uncluttered panel. I too, thought about just using the round guages as
backup but I can get altitude, airspeed (ground speed), orientation and
engine info from so many differnet sources it just didn't make any sense to
me. You may certainly think differently, that is your decision to make.

I've been keeping an eye on these little beauties, and fully intend to install
at least one into my plane when that time comes. I'm also very interested in
their pitot tube, which has additional AOA functions. As of the last time I spoke
to them (Sun N Fun), it wasn't heated. Has there been any news on that?

Brooks,
I talked to them about this issue at Osh, and they intend to have a heated
unit .. but it is not available yet. I am counting on them having one
available too, frankly. For those who are NOT going with a Dynon and want
a heated pitot ... I'm selling one on Ebay right now. This is due to my
change of plans (i.e. I'm going Dynon). See the URL :
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&category=26439&item=2428977045
It is the AN5814 model from Warren Gretz, which is the heated pitot with
static port. I'm also including the appropriate Gretz mount. My reserve
price is almost $200 less than the current retail price from Aircraft
Spruce for the pitot/mount combination. Even if all you need is the pitot
itself ... my reserve will *still* save you almost $100 off of the price
of the pitot alone ... and you get a spare mount in the bargin. A good
deal for everyone involved. :)

Would someone check their two cables and tell me if both or just the mixture
cable has two star lock washers between the lower end nuts that hold the
cable to the firewall. Thanks. ( My throttle cable has one and mixture
has two )
