Alodine 1201 or Iridite (both brand names) is
generically called "chromic acid conversion" or
sometimes "chromate conversion". The mil spec number
is MIL-C-5541 . As others have said, check your local
auto paint shop. PPG and Dupont have the product (as
well as others).

The metal prep is just phosphoric acid which can be
had at Home Depot or similar. Look for Ospho rust
treatment in the paint section.
