I've got to order the wing and fuselage part of my RV7 project and I need to
know if Van's has fixed the problem with water leaking in the front seam of
the Tip-UP canopy.

Brooks,
Being an engineer, I had to take the scientifical (my kids accuse me of being
too scientifical) approach. I did a little geometry and trigonometry and
wrote a BASIC program to crunch out some numbers to help me bend the longerons.
Now, if not too many people laugh at me, I'll publish the results here.
What I did was put the longerons in a pretty heavy vise (level) with hardwood
jaw pads that I made up. Then bend and hammer each inch along the length to
be bent (31 inches). After each bend I took 2 crescent wrenches (one on each
flange of the angle) and bent the longeron back to level. You then move the
longeron out of the vise 1 inch and do it again. I think that's what everyone
does. What the numbers gave me is how far the end of the longeron should be
from a straight edge (I used a 6 foot level) held along the unbent portion of
the longeron for each of the 31 bends. Is there any interest in this data?

Lucky quickbuilders! Er, I mean yeah, what a bunch of pansies! Anyway, I
think I have 'em pretty well figured out -- Just had to vent a bit last
night. I used the technique outlined in the directions, and checked a few
web pages to see if anyone had any brilliant insights (including yours, Dan)
It seems perseverance and patience are the big requirements.

QB fuselages come mostly riveted already...yeah, the longerons are pre-bent,
pre-drilled (afaik), etc. What wusses! Juuust kidding. 8-)
Just keep at it and you'll get 'em. A little bit at a time. It can take a
LOT of iterations to get 'em perfect. What technique are you using to bend
them?

What's all these "longerons" everyone's talking about?

Jim,
The Vans design is unchanged. However I am aware of two successful fixes.
Instead of using layers of fibreglass mat on the front seam, use fibreglass
slurry with shredded threads in it. Its like spreading cement, you get it
from oat builder suppliers. Also you can use automotive windscreen adhesive.
I will be using Sikaflex 295 plus its specialised primers. That stuff can
stick a wet bum to a slipperydip.
See the article in the last edition of the EAA magazine, look for the
article by the South African builder Chalkie Stobbart.
Regards,
David Francis, VH-ZEE, Canberra, Australia.

Since I hope to be bending my longerons sometime this summer, I would be
most happy to obtain any specs. that would facilitate the process. \Paul,
