    Subject: Longerons Shaping
--> RV7-List message posted by: "Dean Psiropoulos" <deanpsir@easystreet.com> I clamped my longerons back to back with small "c clamps" and made a mark on them every inch between where the side bend begins (in front) and ends (in back). This was shown in a rough sketch in my RV-6 instructions. Then I fastened my vice securely to the back of my fuselage jig (you RV-7/9/10 bums don't get the pleasure of building one), which just happened to be above knee height. Then I clamped the longeron assembly in the vise and pushed down on both ends sticking out of the vice (more emphasis on the front portion though). Because the vice was below waist level I could bring a LOT of pressure to bear on the longerons. By pushing down on them then moving the assembly up to the next inch mark, clamping, heaving, moving, clamping and heaving on the longerons I gradually bent them into shape without hitting them with a mallet. This did take a fair amount of grunt on my part but the metal is amazingly malleable and with my set-up I could really lean into it and use my body weight to give me lots of leverage. The plus side was that both longerons were bent at the same time and ended up very close to exactly the same shape. BTW Dana Overall-have you actually painted your RV black yet? Back in the good ole days, when I used to paint cars black, they had to have perfectly STRAIGHT SHEET METAL or that color showed every imperfection, no matter how small (not to mention the heat absorption and the fact that black shows every speck of dust 5 seconds after you finish washing it). Have you thought about having every rivet gun blow show through your beautiful black paint job or are you planning on slathering your rivet lines with bondo (only to have it crack off later)? Just FYI, even though a well done shiny black paint job can be gorgeous, experience tells me NOT to paint large portions of the airplane black. Dean Psiropoulos RV-6A, 24907 Drilling plexi oh boy! I leaned more to Dan C., just put the thing in a vise, twist or pull the direction you want it to go and smack it. I did it with a plastic camping mallet, no big deal at all. I used 3M-77 to glue the template to a piece of cardboard and just bent a little until it fit the template, installed it and twisted until it fit the firewall. I've got agree, it ain't rocket science just smack it and move on..........it's not a big deal:-) Dana Overall Richmond, KY i39 RV-7 slider, Imron black, "Black Magic" Finish kit 13B Rotary.
