--> RV7-List message posted by: "Ron Walker" <ron@walker.net> I just got back from my hangar after doing a bit of work on the 7a. I also own a Grumman AA1A (for sale REAL soon at a great price if anyone is interested ;o)) which is housed in the same hangar. I had some hanger neighbors drop in on me for a chat - but I think they were just there to drool over the RV ;o).... The topic of speed came up. The AA1A is very similar looking and shares a LOT of the same design features of the RV. But the RV just beats the crap out of the Grumman when it comes to speed and climb performance. Both have very clean wings - low profile gear .. etc etc ... yet my Grumman tops out about 120 mph while the RV is 200+ .. granted its a larger engine, but even the RV9 with the O-235 has a book speed of 173 with a larger wing span ! What makes these aircraft so darn clean and fast ? Ron

What makes these aircraft so darn clean and fast ? < Van Magic! Seriously, the AA1B develops, what, 118 horse? What is the difference between the empty weights of the two aircraft? And what engine is your 7A turning? I'd think the RV is faster b/c of its (assumed) lighter weight and cleaner design, as wonderful as "Uncle Roy's" touch is on the Grumman. I learned to fly in a Tiger, and have a great appreciation of the design! best, Cory

--> RV7-List message posted by: JTAnon@aol.com Hi Ron, I too own a Grumman AA-1A and I'm building an RV7A. I will be VERY interested to hear what you have to say regarding similarities/differences in flight characteristics between the two planes once you are flying the 7A. The original design intent for the AA-1A was a responsive sport-type plane capable of light aerobatics. From fooling around in other than straight and level flight I know the roll rate is pretty crisp and pulling back in a dive produces a pretty impressive pitch attitude (although I would never do actual Acro unless it was permitted in case the FAA is listening). As far as I know, the only thing that prevented certification for aerobatics was a spin problem related to lack of rudder authority (sound vaugley familiar? at least Van came up with a solution). Anyway, I'll really be curious. John McDonnell - RV 7A QB kit #9 (The world's slowest quickbuild kit)
