Has anyone had any good results using wintip com. antennas? Van has said he has
had better luck with canopy antennas. Would appreciate any and all comments.

I gave a little thought to a canopy antenna, but then, most com radios
transmit 8 to 10 (the G430 can be 16) watts. I don't really like the idea
of having that much output near my head. I'd like to keep what few brain
cells I still have operating...

Folks,
The radhaz safety distance from a typical VHF transmit antenna is around 8
inches max, which is why you can easily and safely use Vans adhesive antenna
up the centre of the windscreen.
Nav antennnas are passive and present no safety hazard. For a dissertation
on canopy antennas read Speed With Economy by Kent Paser. A good option for
RV builders intending to have tip tanks fitted.
For more info search the Matronics Aeroelectric list. You should find good
discussion from Bob Nuckolls, he knows his electrical stuff. Basically you
have lots of options to reduce drag with internal antennas.

There should be tons on this in the archives, but just to re-iterate....
The wingtip NAV antennas are pretty good! The wingtip Comm antennas are not
nearly as good. Save your time and install a bent whip on the belly. You
won't regret it, and it's FAR superior. I have one of each, as do many
others who have gone before me and can conclusively say the bent whip in the
belly is the way to go....
Cheers,
