I don't really like the idea of having that much output near my head. I'd like to keep what few brain cells I still have operating... Nav antennnas are passive and present no safety hazard. For a dissertation on canopy antennas read Speed With Economy by Kent Paser. A good option for RV builders intending to have tip tanks fitted. For more info search the Matronics Aeroelectric list. You should find good discussion from Bob Nuckolls, he knows his electrical stuff. Basically you have lots of options to reduce drag with internal antennas. The wingtip NAV antennas are pretty good! The wingtip Comm antennas are not nearly as good. Save your time and install a bent whip on the belly. You won't regret it, and it's FAR superior. I have one of each, as do many others who have gone before me and can conclusively say the bent whip in the belly is the way to go....
