Subject: | Primer-I am finally out of the SW wash primer |
--> RV7-List message posted by: "Merems" <merems@cox.net>
Fellow builders,
I just finished primering the wing skins and I am finally out of the SW wash primer.
I am very disappointed in this product and do not recommend it.
Years ago I used a wash primer similar to the SW on my RV-4 with very little problems,
however the SW was a real nightmare. My main issue is spitting of chunks
of semi congealed primer on the surface and runs. I mixed the primer per
the directions, tried different pressures and different guns, but still similar
results. I live in Arizona and the climate is a bit dry which may have contributed.
The inside of my wing skins are speckled with primer, but know one will
see this.
Now that I am finished primering all my wing components I will be using the AKZO
primer on the fuselage. It may be more of a little hassle to set up, but the
results appear so much more consistent then the SW primer.

I bought a complete kit from avery & am very happy with it but I have a
quick build. If I were you I would buy either an avery or a cleveland.
Sounds like all the rest ore questionable but cant say for sure. I think for
a standard kit you may want a pneumatic squeezer.

I built an RV6A with a slider canopy but for the 7 am consdiering the tip-up.
I am aware tip-up gives easier access behind the panel, but is ingress and
egress from the plane easier/harder with a tip-up verses a slider?

I personally don't think it matters much -- it just changes where you'll put
your hands when getting in and out. On the slider, you can grab the roll
bar in front of you (assuming you weld or bolt handles to it). On the
tip-up, you grab and lean against the cabin frame roll bar behind you. I
prefer the tip-up for the in-flight visibility and would not even consider
the alternative. I'm a snob.
Don't necessarily let ease of maintenance affect your decision, though.
Regardless of canopy style, access panels can make your life easier. Even
with a tip-up, stuff forward of the sub-panel can be difficult to access --
access panels sure simplify things.
Do you not have RVs nearby with tip-up canopies? If not, head over to
Copperstate or Las Cruces in a couple of weeks. You're bound to find a few.

Mary Beth,
I have been in and out of both tip-up and slider many times. To me, tip up
is easier on both ingress & egress. I just finished installing a tip-up on
my 7A. Also, I like the roll bar over my head, to hang on to and lean
against when getting in/out. If you do a tip up, be sure and get the tip-up
reinforce kit for only $20. Van put it on his 7A demo but it is not, or was
not, part of the regular finish kit I received. Don't why, but it was not
in my plans and I had to order it separately. It sure helps stabilize the
struts when one person opens and closes from one side.
