--> RV7-List message posted by: "Darwin Barrie" <ktlkrn@cox.net> Hi Mary Beth, I am nearing completion of my 7 tip up. I have rode in several tip up's and sliders. The only significant advantages I see to the slider is the ability to taxi with it open, you can leave it open at Fly-Ins for people to look inside and according to most it might be a little easier to construct. Ingress and egress is the same. The tip up provides excellent visibility and most importantly access to the bulk of the avionics. And, as Dan noted, you can put access panel in up front for the rest. The stiffener kit is now supposedly standard. It does add considerable strength to the structure. I would suggest you go an ride in both and evaluate for your self. Either way it is an RV will be enjoyed to the max!! Darwin N. Barrie Chandler AZ

Subject: Primer-I am finally out of the SW wash primer
--> RV7-List message posted by: "Herron, Al" <Al.Herron@Aerojet.com> I have had the same problem with the Sherwin-Williams wash primer. Also, instead of the clear primer that Van's used, the product I received was a translucent green color. Not much of a problem since any visible areas will receive a color topcoat, but certainly not the product I was expecting. My main concern is the "splotchy" application. If you don't need a clear finish, I'd recommend VariPrime instead, even though it's more expensive. -----Original Message----- From: owner-rv7-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-rv7-list-server@matronics.com]On Behalf Of Merems rv7-list@matronics.com; RV-9A@yahoogroups.com; rv9-list@matronics.com Subject: RV7-List: Primer-I am finally out of the SW wash primer --> RV7-List message posted by: "Merems" <merems@cox.net> Fellow builders, I just finished primering the wing skins and I am finally out of the SW wash primer. I am very disappointed in this product and do not recommend it. Years ago I used a wash primer similar to the SW on my RV-4 with very little problems, however the SW was a real nightmare. My main issue is spitting of chunks of semi congealed primer on the surface and runs. I mixed the primer per the directions, tried different pressures and different guns, but still similar results. I live in Arizona and the climate is a bit dry which may have contributed. The inside of my wing skins are speckled with primer, but know one will see this. Now that I am finished primering all my wing components I will be using the AKZO primer on the fuselage. It may be more of a little hassle to set up, but the results appear so much more consistent then the SW primer. Paul RV-4/RV-7A

--> RV7-List message posted by: Hopperdhh@aol.com Lucio, Your English is infinitely better than my Italian. It is a delight to hear from you, please don't hesitate to post listings letting us know how your project is doing. I bought the Avery tool set when I started my RV-7A, and have found it to be one of my best investments. You will have the tools to do 98 percent of the project. A local junk yard provided some scrap steel for a back riveting plate and some oddball bucking bars. I used a large punch backed up by a bucking bar several places where regular bucking bars didn't work. The Avery set will only amount to about 1/20 (5%) of your total investment, and you'll still have it after your first RV is finished. By the way, the 7A is a fantastic airplane -- you'll love it. Subject: S-W Primer
--> RV7-List message posted by: Jim Duckett <perfeng@3rivers.net> Hi Guys, One of the primary reasons we quit using S-W / Martin-Senour products of any kind is for that very reason. That and little or no support when we had a bad batch of something. As with most refinishing products, there IS a shelf-life of sorts because of the different components in the product. Generally speaking when you get splattering it's not due to temperature or humidity. It's most often caused from incompatability of components ( i.e. wrong thinner used), or a chemical seperation or curing of one or more of the products components. Once either one happens there's nothing to do but throw the stuff away. No amount of shaking or stirring will ever get it back. Case in point, Trunk Splatter Paint. The reason it splatters a colored pattern on a black or gray field is the pattern material is generally colored latex (water base) suspended in the primary material that is black or gray enamel. In the case of the primer, one or more components are not emulsifying in the mixture for what ever reason. It's generally the age of the product(s) if all the right additives and reducers are being used. Our experience has been that S-W batches large quanities and then warehouses it until it's sold. The stores then warehouse it until they sell it. Your wash primer may have been a couple of years old before you opened the lid. Being that S-W is way to the back of the line as a producer / supplier in these types of product lines, the products don't turn as fast as say PPG, DuPont, or even Azco. Just an Old Painters Experience.... Jim Duckett Do Not Archive
