Don,
I have full IFR with infinity grips in my RV-6. Both the pilot and copilot
switches are wired the same with a toggle switch on the floor between the
seats which disconnects the ground on the copilots switches and so makes them
inoperable (pilot switches always active). The toggle switch has a "lift to
switch" feature so it doesn't accidentally get moved (the stem of the toggle
must be pulled to switch it over). For the copilot I put a second PTT button
on the far right of my panel along with a micro switch which engages either
the stick PTT or the panel button PTT.
Both grips have the following:
PTT
coolie hat up - com flip flop
coolie hat down - transponder ident
starter (wired through a relay with a safety switch on the panel) - allows
starting while holding grip back
Auto pilot switch (switches auto pilot on and off)
Altitude engage/disengage
Auto pilot disengage
I believe you can put too much on the grip which detracts from safe flying.
Manual aileron and elevator trims are more sensitive, so I did not go with
electric trim. Look me up at Sun n' Fun if you attend as I think my grip and
panel layout is the best I have seen in an RV (N216PH, 2006 Sun 'n Fun
RESERVE GRAND CHAMPION).

On my 7, I have the Ray Allen with 4 buttons and front PTT. I have
electric trim on elevator only. I use what would be the aileron trim
buttons for an Comm 1 Flip/Flop on left switch and AP disconnect on the
right switch.
I have nothing on the co pilot stick to ease the removal, AND, I've
found that in nearly 200 hours and 50 passengers later, there has been
not one incidence where the co pilot had a need to use any functions. I
do have a co pilot PTT switch on the panel.
My recommendation would be to keep it as simple as possible. In no case
would I put a starter or flaps on the stick. There is simply too much of
an opportunity hit them in turbulent conditions.
Remember this is a fun airplane that is meant to be relatively simple,
not an F18!!!!

KISS - Keep It simple stupid.
PTT, that is it, period, may be Trim.
You are more likely to have inadvertent deployment the more
buttons you have on the stick. Just put the trim or flaps near or
even on the throttle (so you can do it by feel).

Imho it depends on the type of switches you use. Sure, if you use a
"bat" style toggle switch for your flaps, something could hit it or
catch on it.
But if you use a single-axis coolie, so to speak (I'm not sure of the
name for it, but it's like a coolie hat that just moves in one axis),
then how is that any more dangerous than having a coolie hat for trim?!
Flying a Mooney M20F with Precise Flight speed brakes, I once
inadvertently slapped a map down on the yoke as I was reading it. I
heard & felt a rumbling and saw the red light on the panel...doh! I had
smacked the speed brake button.
FWIW, there is nothing like that on my RV-7's stick. Everything is
protected from typical situations like that. You couldn't convince me
to get the flap control off my stick -- but remember it's not a toggle
switch. It's a LOW PROFILE single-axis "slider" coolie whatever.

The PAX stick question must not be a good topic?

I'll bet you will get better response if you try again next week.

Here is my variation on that theme. This is just another way to handle the
Pax wiring. Used a DB9 connector inset into the pax control stick just
above the area that goes into the column. Sorry for the bad pix. Plugs or
unplugs easily to remove stick. Adel clamp makes sure there is no
interference. Loop goes in the open area of the seat. Will probably use a
little custom clip on the DB9 to make sure it stays in place when you want
it to.

Question...
If a person was to bolt a cut down version of the PAX stick in place as per
the SB, to extend say an inch or so above seat pan, an then put a tight
fitted slip over stick with a removable locking push pin would this work?
Then... install a male fixed plug in the stub coming up, a fixed female plug
the removable stick for switch options? I know they use this type of set-up
for removable lights on boats. Just an idea...

Bill,
I must say... that is a brilliant idea. The pic came
out well enough to make the point.
Thanks for the reply.
