Subject: | W-818 Pushrod Assembly |
The initial assembly of the W-818 pushrod did not come out as good as I hop
ed. On the first hole=2C using a drill press=2C the opposing hole on the e
nd of the ST4130 did not come out exactly 180 degrees=2C more like 160 degr
ees. I'm considering changing course and weld the ST4130 and the rod end t
ogether. If I go that route=2C should I fill the two drill holes that are
already there? Any suggestions what kind of instruction to give the welder
regarding what type of welding rod to use? If a "bead" is put between the
rod end and the tube=2C I would probably have to shorten the rod by a leng
th equal to the "bead".
Comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

On the first hole, using a drill press, the opposing hole on the end of the
ST4130 did not come out exactly 180 degrees, more like 160 degrees. I'm considering
changing course and weld the ST4130 and the rod end together. If I go
that route, should I fill the two drill holes that are already there? Any suggestions

Hi Vmax,
My recommendation would be to throw your exiting W-818 out and buy a new one.
You're dealing with your life here. Anything having to do with flight controls
needs to be 100%. In the long run, you'll look back at this and will be very
happy you did it right.
During the construction of my RV-8, my goal has been "no regrets", no matter how
big or small. If it wasn't perfect, I did it again, generally with new parts.
I have no regrets looking back.

Matt:
I'm not a structural engineer but it seems to me you'd be better off with a
rivet slightly off the mark than with a weld at that location. A broken
weld might buy you the farm - an off the mark rivet is probably of no
consequence. My advice: Call Vans and see what they have to say. If
necessary - order another pushrod and ST4130 fitting and do it over.
What'll it cost - a few dollars and a little bit of time. That fitting is
critical and must be absolutely fail-safe - I would not trust a weld.

Heyden,I would get new parts. Did you use a V block on the drill press? With one,you
can drill through one side of rod and then stop and make sure the rod is
centered with bit and then finish drilling. I also like to drill undersize to
start with. To help with riveting, drill a half inch hole in a short piece of
2 x 4, then split it. Use these in a vise to clamp rod for riveting so rod will
not rotate when squeezing rivet. Dave Ross
