Hi Harrell:
Congratulations - way to go! Welcome to the fraternity/sorority of
builders.
The best way to do this is to set yourself a series of goals and sub goals -
obviously your ultimate goal is to build an RV-7 - but mentally/emotionally
that's a lot to handle and you may get discouraged - so your immediate goal
is the empennage - break that down into smaller sub-goals, e.g., the trim
tab, elevator, horizontal stab, vert stab, etc.. Concentrate on one
sub-component at a time - getting them done one at a time - take pride,
satisfaction and encouragement from that one finished item - then move on to
the next and the next - be realistic - strive for perfection but try not to
be a perfectionist - if you do you may never finish your project - my RV-7A
is pretty to look at, flies beautifully and is perfectly safe - but it isn't
perfect - give yourself enough time - it took my wife and me 6.5 years to
finish our RV-7A - (we were both 67 when we finished). When I got started I
was working 50+ hours per week at my day job and was lucky to get 1.5 hours
done on the airplane in the evening (and of course many hours on the
weekends) - but you'd be amazed how much you can get done in 1.5 hours - and
1.5 + 1.5 + etc, etc, adds up to lots of hours. After I retired at age 66 I
went at it full time. Try to get yourself a mentor - someone who has been
there and done that.- I was lucky - I've had the best. An EAA chapter would
be a good place to find one. Try to get family involved - your wife or a
child. My wife did most of the rivetting and developed and artist's touch
with and Avery 3X - no lowly bucking bar for this lady. Enjoy the process
- good luck - hang in there.
On a different subject but still airplane related: I'm 68 years old and
have noticed over the years that, human nature being what it is, we're
usually far more quick to complain and criticize when things go wrong that
we are to appreciate and praise when they go right. So - allow me a few
lines and a little read time to say something nice. My wife and I recently
flew our RV-7A from our home base in Northampton, MA (7B2) to Beaufort
County, SC (KARW) near Hilton Head, where we tied down for a few days and
visited with relatives. Great folks at ARW - friendly and helpful - with a
nice, clean, well maintained airport. We intended to fly on to central
Florida but the weather would not allow it so we rented a car and drove
down. Florida is always nice but this year we froze. On the way back up the
coast from Beaufort County we stopped for fuel at Suffolk Executive (KSFQ)
in Suffolk, VA. It was clean, efficient, friendly, has a nice little
restaurant and very cheap 100LL. (Probably the cheapest fuel on the east
coast.) We pushed on further north, hoping that the weather might allow us
to at least get as far as southern New Jersey; it was not to be. After
dodging a couple of snow squalls going up the Delmarva, and with worsening
conditions further north, we decided to call it a day at Salisbury/Ocean
City/Wicomico, MD (KSBY), landing late Sunday afternoon in strong, gusty
winds. The folks at BayLand Aviation really went the extra mile for us.
They were friendly, professional and incredibly helpful. They got the
airplane out of the wind and into an unused hangar - called us a cab and
recommended a hotel. We returned the following morning, checked the weather
and decided to rent a car and drive home. I forgot a small backpack in the
flight planning room. When we arrived home late Monday evening there was a
message on the answering machine telling us that they had found the backpack
and would hold it for us. A friend/mentor flew me down the following Friday
in his own RV-7A and I flew the airplane home to Massachusetts. While in
the Bay Land office I left a Hershey bar on a table in the lounge; on long
flights I find they're a good source of energy. An employee came out to the
hangar while I wa pre-flighting to return the Hershey bar. Salisbury, MD is
a great town with good restaurante and hotels, a fine airport with all the
amenities and a truly outstanding FBO in Bay Land Aviation. You can bet
that on future flights south, we'll go out of our way to stop in.
