--> RV8-List message posted by: "Lawson, Michael" <mikel@SSD.FSI.com> Fellow RV-8/8A lovers, I was just making more progress on my wings last night, when a nasty thought hit me: "Why am I building an RV-8 -- an RV-7 would be much better, in terms of passenger comfort, as a platform for getting my instrument rating, and in terms of baggage space." When I started on my -8, I was single, and had the "fighter plane" mentality. Now that I just got married, I have to think that maybe the wife would be happier in a side-by-side. I even considered trying to figure out if my existing -8 wings and tail could be used in a -7, but alas, I have already received the -8 fuselage. (FWIW, the wife has not expressed a tandem/SBS preference either way; she just wishes I would take her flying in SOMETHING first before this plane is done...) ;-) So, what I'm hoping for is for some encouragement from some of y'all who are happily flying your RV-8's/RV-8A's that I've got a great plane going here and that I don't need to backtrack to doing a -7. Thanks for any encouragement. --> RV8-List message posted by: RV8ter@aol.com Build what the hell YOU want to fly. I started off with a 6 for the spousal reasons you stated and then my wife rode in one and rode in a 8. She preferred the personal space of the 8 so I jumped on the chance to change. There is no substitute for the pilot getting to sit on the centerline. Get your wife a chance to fly in each if it's a big deal to you. Consider putting a garmin 196 or 296 in the back so she can see the pseudo instrument page and the map data. It's what I'm doing, FWIW. I know that I'll be flying most of the time solo doing acro and formation with an occasional CC trip with a family member so the 8 is perfect. lucky In a message dated 4/1/2004 4:24:26 PM Eastern Standard Time, mikel@SSD.FSI.com writes: --> RV8-List message posted by: "Lawson, Michael" <mikel@SSD.FSI.com> Fellow RV-8/8A lovers, I was just making more progress on my wings last night, when a nasty thought hit me: "Why am I building an RV-8 -- an RV-7 would be much better, in terms of passenger comfort, as a platform for getting my instrument rating, and in terms of baggage space." Longest trip was from North Carolina to Key West. She does not have an interest in working the radios, flying the plane, etc. so she is perfectly happy in the tandem. If she wanted to be more of a "pilot" or "helper" then maybe she would prefer SBS. Len Leggette, RV-8A Greensboro, NC N910LL 222 hrs

--> RV8-List message posted by: Scott Bilinski <bilinski@kyocera-wireless.com> My wife likes to fly with me but wants nothing to do with flying. She sits in back seat, sight seeing, reading, listening to CD's or what ever. She has her own space and is comfortable. I remove the stick and cover the stick area. She could not be happier with this arrangement. I also got a nice shoulder/neck massage on our last trip!! For me as a passanger I dont like butting shoulders or shoulder over lap in a SBS. There is no comfortable place to put my feet so they are not in the way while landing and taxing. The stick hits my legs easily combine that with no where to put my feet on landing and it is uncomfortable for me, although for a short time. Then email me your address (including zip code) so I can have the trucking company pick-up my new RV-8 quick build kit. :-} Chuck Do Not archive ----- Original Message ----- From: Lawson, Michael <mikel@SSD.FSI.com> Subject: RV8-List: Please save me from RV-8 remorse > --> RV8-List message posted by: "Lawson, Michael" <mikel@SSD.FSI.com> > > Fellow RV-8/8A lovers, > > I was just making more progress on my wings last night, when a nasty thought > hit me: "Why am I building an RV-8 -- an RV-7 would be much better, in > terms of passenger comfort, as a platform for getting my instrument rating, > and in terms of baggage space." > > When I started on my -8, I was single, and had the "fighter plane" > mentality. --> RV8-List message posted by: RICKRV6@aol.com Mike, I'm just one more in the choir but I have to agree with the other posts. I finished my -6 in 92 and flew it for 500 hours all over the country before I sold it to finance my -8. My wife traveled with me often in the -6 but like many of the others, she was more interested in arriving than the joy of flying. Not that others didn't enjoy a front seat view (which I do think is superior than any backseat), but as far as I'm concerned only my wife mattered. And she really didn't care one way or the other. This is strictly my opinion but the baggage arrangement in the -8 is clearly superior than in my -6. My -6 had a O-320 and wood prop and therefore, was light in the nose. My problem with baggage in that airplane was not the volume but the balance when light on fuel. The -8's ability to distribute the weight between two compartments is clearly superior. I suspect however, an O-360, constant speed -7 this would not be as big an issue. As for the instrument rating, I have to hand it to the guys who got there ratings in a -6 or a -7. I got mine in a C172 while I was building the -8. I'm not going to advocate one method over another but it's a good way to keep flying while you're building. If you put some effort into a good panel design it is quite possible to have a well equipped IFR capable -8. Lastly, that WWII fighter paint job looks much more at home on an -8. Finish the -8 and if you find out later you made the wrong decision, it's just a good excuse to build number 2.
