Ideally the RV8 would come in at the same weight as a good RV4, this would
improve the handling and responsiveness.
Tom, with full fuel and two heavy guys your RV8 comes in well over the
original (inc' fuel) gross weight without any baggage. - best get your buddy
down to the gym ! :)

I think you would have to drill a lot of holes in the RV8 to
get it as light as a 4! It's pretty amazing the difference
in the size of the two. The 8 is a lot bigger, and if you put
an engine in it, it will weigh more than a 4. I'd bet that
an 8 with a 320 and nothing in the panel would weigh more
than a 4. Just a lot more material there.

Hey,
After a LONG hiatus I am back.....for a little while anyway. We are
moving to Wichita this month, if we can find a place to live =) (Does
anyone know of a nice place to rent while we look for a place to buy??)
Baron has been transferred to McConnell and so off we go into the wild
blue yonder....oops sorry it seems that I have had a little too much Dr.
Pepper today if I am breaking into song.
I moved our freebee site to a paid server so that it gets backed up
nightly, I would really hate for something to happen to it.
www.rv-8a.4t.com has changed to www.rv-8.org nothing has really changed
lately except for the major fact that we are going with an RV-8 instead
of an RV-8a.
Cheers,

Without getting into the "what is better" argument, what were your reason
s for swapping to the -8, and did you consider or check out such things a
s crosswind limits, pilot experience, insurance permiums, etc? What did y
ou find out? I ask because I will have that same decision in six months o
r so...

I built the RV-8. At about your point in building, I struggled with the
8-8A decision. Even though I had over 1200hrs in taildraggers, including
50-60 hrs in a Pitts Special I was hesitant because of insurance and resale
value.
One day while picking the brain of one of Van's gurus about something else,
I posed the same question. His answer; "what do you want to see when you
open the hangar door?"-----------Problem solved.
Tail draggers can be a bit more to handle on take off and landing, but it is
nothing that can't be learned in a reasonable amount of time with a good
instructor. In the long run, if you learn to do it properly, stay in
control and not become a passenger, YOU WILL be a better pilot.
Your insurance will be a bit higher, but that pales in comparison to the
satisfaction you will have after landing in a crosswind and taxiing in to
the silent envy of the nosewheel drivers. (Pilots?)

I think I need to check out the insurance situation as operating costs wi
ll factor more highly than building costs. At least for me. Of course, I
don't yet have a license yet, but the 25 or so hours I cobbled together s
pread over the last 15 years or so were all Cessna 152/172. Actually, the
guy that runs the skydive centre where I instruct also runs a flying c
lub. And they have a taildragger that I could learn in. Could be useful t
o learn from scratch (almost). I should ask him about that...
I like the "what do you want to see" comment...
Thanks,
