I just finished the horizontal stabilizer a few minutes ago--at least, I hope I did. One of the last processes is to buck the AN470 rivets on the front spar--the ones that hold the center-most ribs (fore and aft) to the front spar itself and the two extruded aluminum angle fittings. The rivets look good. I located the manufactured heads directly over the extruded aluminum angle fittings. When I finished, I noticed the rivet set had not been absolutely straight, which resulted in smiles that encircle about 120 degrees of the extruded aluminum angle fittings around the rivets. The depth is perhaps 10/1,000 of an inch. I know how important the structural integrity of the extruded fittings are. The smiles have very smooth edges. Is this okay? Thanks, Chet ________________________________ Message 2 _____________________________________ Time: 05:52:10 PM PST US From: "Carl Froehlich" Subject: RE: RV8-List: Is this Okay? These are easy to drill out and do over. Recommend putting a couple of layers of masking tape on the rivet set. This will prevent smiles. Replace the tape every third rivet or so.
