Subject: | RE: RV-List: Oil Cooler's... |
Matt,
A few thoughts:
- Mounting the cooler on the firewall solves the "heavy vibrating object
mounted with a large moment arm" problem. Attached photo is how I did it on
the RV-10 (not shown is the forward cooler support attached to the engine
mount). On the RV-8A I mounted the cooler on the right side of the firewall
with the 3" hose connecting on the right side of the plenum. I believe most
8s are on the right side as there is more room.
- Mounting the cooler on the firewall allows for an easy "oil cooler air
butterfly valve" install in the 3" hose between the cooler and firewall.
Here is one place to get this butter fly valve:

- Consider using the AirFlow oil cooler if you end up buying a replacement.
I have this on my RV-10 and have never had a oil temp issue. Here is one
place to get this cooler:

I thought the source of the cracking had been addressed. I had some issues
with the left-rear baffle flange cracking too in the beginning. I made the
rear baffle nice and strong, but used the stock left-rear piece which was
.032. It just wasn't up for the task. I later added a cross strut from the
crankcase just ahead of the hoist loop all the way back to the left rear
corner and added some .063 angle stiffners over the oil cooler flanges for
additional support. I'm wondering if I cracked the flange today taking the
oil cooler off. It was pretty stuck on and I was having to do a fair amount
of prying to get it to separate from the gasket. I would have been more
careful if I'd of realized those flanges are made out of such crappy pot
metal. Man, they are soft.
Since I'm rebuilding, I decided to rebuild the left-rear baffle part and was
taking the oil cooler off today to accommodate that. That's when I noticed
the crack.
Attached are some pictures of the setup prior to disassembly today.

My first choice is engine vibration, and the second is stress due to the
baffle mounting flange not being flat.

Anyone on the net aware of the extent of horizontal stab spar and elevator attachment
points cracks?
Not exactly looking forward to doing those SBs if the incidence rate has been really
low..

I have completed the inspection and didn't find any cracks. Be aware that SB 14-02-03
was superseded by SB 14-02-05. recommended that it not be done as a preventative
maintenance.

Hi Ya Grumpy,
All you have to do is remove the fairing at the tailplane to inspect the stab main
spar area. The elevators/rudder inspection does not require removal of anything.
If no cracks are found then you must do nothing except inspect each year. If cracks
are found then the rectification must be made.
Be sure to check the Jam Nuts on the rod ends. ( seems that loose jam nuts can
cause the problem)
Cheers .... Alan. RV8 Flying in Australia.

Just a note to make sure all know about the Van's SERVICE BULLETIN 14-01-31
.
It's easy to accomplish the inspection - and important.
I would advise Van's if you find any cracking so he can track the fleet inf
ormation.
If you don't have a copy of the SB then send me an email and I will send it
to you in PDF.
