Subject: | RV-8 flap fairing |
Listers,
I'm experiencing some trouble getting the flap fairing to fit. When the ai
lerons are in the neutral position and training edges of the flaps match th
at position, the flap fairing sits too low on the flap root edge to leave e
nough fairing metal to be riveted satisfactorily using the designated rivet
holes. Moving the flap fairing up to get enough material to set rivets giv
es me about half an inch gap at the trailing edge of the flap fairing betwe
en that and the flap. If I move the trailing edge of the flap up 5 degrees
or so, the fairing fits just fine.
Some questions:
1. I am making the gross assumption that the trailing edges of the ailerons
and flaps line up when properly positioned. Is this a good assumption? Som
ehow I just can't see a 5 degree split being what Van had in mind.
2. Has anyone else experienced this problem, and how did you solve it?
Thanks for the help!
v/r,
P2

Are you SURE your ailerons are in the right position when neutral? Don't use the
wing tips as a guide. The wing tips are generally NOT right and have to be
cut and adjusted.
Recheck your aileron alignment. My RV-8 QB flap fairings fit very nicely.

Preston,
If the situation is as you say and this issue is identical on both sides,
then both your flaps have a twist. I suspect this is not the issue but you
should check.
1. The flaps must fit up tight to the fuselage. Do this first. Based on
what you have said I suspect this resolves your flap fairing issue.
2. Once the flaps are tight up against the fuselage, use a straight edge on
the wing extending over the flap. Examine the gap between the straight edge
and the flap at both the inboard and outboard edges of the flap. They
should be about the same. If not the flap is twisted.
3. Assuming the flap is not twisted, then you have to find out why what you
think is aileron neutral is not what the flaps think as neutral. Here the
wing templates come in real handy to find the real aileron neural point. If
you don't have these, then use of a straight edge on the top and bottom of
the wing. With a lot of measuring and comparing will get you what you need.
Do not rely on the Van's aileron bell crank "neutral" template for this.
4. After you figure this out, first the flaps then the ailerons, then and
only then are you ready to fit the wingtip. If you already fit the wingtip
then you have some rework to do.
Carl

Are you SURE your ailerons are in the right position when neutral? Don't

Recheck your aileron alignment. My RV-8 QB flap fairings fit very nicely.
