Listers, With the advent of the =9Cmonitor standby=9D feature on manymod ern radios, are folks still installing two panel-mounted radios or sticking with one plus a handheld backup? Used to be we had to tell ATC we=99d be =9Cofffreq for one, monitor Guard, report back up=9D to lis ten to ATIS. No longer. Plan is for basic IFR: single VOR/LOC/GS, GPS, thinking G3XPFDs (10 inch an d/or 7 inch), maybe a Garmin combo GPS/NAV/COM. The RV-8panel is a bit sma ll, and saving space is becoming a necessity as the layoutmatures. Is there a pressing need for that second COM? Many thanks, and fly safely. v/r, P2 RV-8 ________________________________ Message 2 _____________________________________ Time: 06:44:47 PM PST US From: Carl Froehlich Subject: Re: RV8-List: Two radios or one? Yes - I offer that for an IFR plane a second radio should be part of the pan el. I have the Garmin GTN-650 for Comm #1 and the Dynon radio for Comm #2. Performance wise the Dynon works just as well as the GTN-650. The Dynon ra dio itself is mounted behind the panel with just a small control head on the panel. If you have the Dynon SkyView EFIS the radio is integrated into the EFIS so freqs are automatically uploaded. We just did a panel upgrade for my old RV-8A using a single 10" SkyView EFIS with a stand alone Dynon D10A as the backup. All fit well on the panel - e ven with adding an airspeed and altimeter steam gauges.
