Both are used for engine start and in normal mode run in parallel. I replace one battery every three years - so no battery is older than six years. I started out replacing one every two years but found they still had a lot of life left in them. The pulled batteries go on to a second life in various tractors. Note - I once killed a new battery by leaving the master on. While some say you can beat new life into abused Odyssey batteries, it is better to replace the battery and then experiment on the dead one for service in a tractor. At about the one and half year mark, in the winter they get weak and have trouble turning the cold engine, especially after sitting 2 to 3 weeks. My battery is in the rear if the plane, that may make a difference compared to engine compartment installs. Been that way for the 10 years or so Ive been flying the airplane.
