I started working on my -9 at the end of April.
I now have almost 300 hours in the kit, including building a very cool
oak drafting table to hold my drawings. All that without so much as a
sliver in my hand. Every time I enter my shop I put on my safety
glasses, use hearing protection and respirators when necessary. Safety
is my middle name. (I don't want to finish the airplane and find I
can't fly it because of I managed to hurt myself in the building
process.)
This morning I installed a new CD player in my Girlfriends/riveting
partner's Honda CR-V and in the process I sliced a finger on my right
open on the supporting structure. No problem, clean the wound add a
band aid and continue. When I installed the radio I realized it need a
support bracket to hold it up. Great! I can put my new found mettle
working skills to work. I quickly cut out some galvanized sheet in the
shape I needed, bent a stiffening tab on the bottom, etc. Used my cleco
clamps to hold it in place while I drill two holes for the steel pop
rivets I have laying around. First hole no problem, started the second
one and promptly drilled right in to my finger. OUCH!
The morel of the story, injuries happen when you become complacent. Be
careful!

I'm not clear on what balanced means when it comes to setting up the elevators.
Is it recommended we bolt everything together including push rods, control sticks
and trim servo after painting in hopes the elevators will simply set in trail?
Van makes clear his concern for flutter in the performance testing of the
manual. Has anyone experienced problems here and to what degree of detail should
we strive for? I recall reading somewhere we are not trying to balance the
system only prevent flutter.??? Also if anyone has drilled the counter weights
to lighten it did you drill a series of holes along the centerline or just
one?

I can appreciate that, only I drilled into a left fingernail that wasn't in
the way...or so I thought.

At Oshkosh last July, I saw aux fuel tanks on a RV-4 that were made from a 5" tube
that was placed in the nose rib lightening holes.
Anyone know where I could get more information about this?
