I even have an idle bit of spring stainless on my workbench right now. I take it that the door pushes in and then rotates along the inside surface of the pant around the hole you used the light source to locate. Neat idea, I like it. It also makes finding an air nozzle that will work to air up the tire a bit easier as you can have a larger hole to access the stem and still be able to close it for when you are in flight. Net add to your airplane tool kit - 1 Phillips screwdriver and 1 nutdriver. From: Gerry Filby <gerf@gerf.com>
--> RV9-List message posted by: Gerry Filby <gerf@gerf.com> The Rudder counterbalance skin overlaps the main skin and the spar and where it does - 8 rivets total - AN460AD3-4 rivets are called out. In my enthusiasm with that wicked Avery pneumatic squeezer (which I just got yesterday) I riveted all around the ribs and counterbalance skin, forgetting 6 of the rivets that secure the skin to the counterbalance skin to the rear spar - the inner ones ... if you're groaning with disgust at this point, you can imagine how I felt as the adolescent nature of my actions dawned on me. So since the inside of the counterbalance skin is no longer accessible I have two choices - blind rivet with MK-319-BS or call up vans with a parts list for a new rudder. Can I get away with the blind rivets ? g -- RV-9 #90842 ========================================================== Gerry Filby gerf@gerf.com Home (415) 239 4846 Cell (415) 203 9177

The best answer is to call VANS Support and ask them. --> RV9-List message posted by: Gerry Filby <gerf@gerf.com> My experience drilling out rivets so far is that its rarely "clean" and if you can avoid it you're better off going that way. Also there's two blind rivets between the tip rib and the end of the spar which, if I heed the many warnings I've seen, are very difficult to drill out. I'm not worried so much about the cosmetics of it, more the strength. I better call Vans and get the "official" line ... thanks all. g > > --> RV9-List message posted by: kerrjohna@comcast.net > > can you drill out the rivets and correct the problem? > > it will be good practice when you make the same kind of mistake later,d: > ) > > --> RV9-List message posted by: Gerry Filby <gerf@gerf.com> > > > > > > The Rudder counterbalance skin overlaps the main skin and the > > spar and where it does - 8 rivets total - AN460AD3-4 rivets are > > called out. --> RV9-List message posted by: DThomas773@aol.com If you are drilling out #3 rivets and planning to replace them with pop rivets, don't worry about drilling them out. You are drilling out a rivet that went into a number 40 hole, and replacing it with a rivet that needs to be drilled out to number 30, or 1/8 inch. So, if your drilling isn't perfect, it won't matter. You will be enlarging the hole anyway. Dennis Thomas
