The O-290 is nearly the same weight as an O-320, but parts for O/H are
more expensive (or so I am told).
And it also has less power then the -320. I'd go with a 150hp -320, as
there are plenty around. do not archive

I sure wish I was flying but I'm not. The good news is the other O-290
powered -9 owners I've spoken to see exactly Van's numbers with a Catto
prop. 173 mph @ 75% for the -9A.

The O-290 is about 20 lbs lighter, can run auto fuel, etc. About 40% of
the parts are from the O-235, 40% from the O-320, and the others are
unique to the O-290.
As for parts price, sure, some are more $$$ but how often do you buy a
piston or a crank?
In my case I found a zero time O-290 for $3,500. If I could have found
a zero time O-320 for the same price, I would have bought it but that
was not the case. I've pulled all four cylinders and changed the
accessory case so I can install a fuel pump, bought a duel pair of
P-mags, and yellow tagged the carb I bought from an air-boat builder.
Even with all that, the price is way less than a used O-320.
Here's the deal, and the same goes for the O-235. You will have to do a
lot of custom work to install either of these engines as Van's does not
make a FwF kit for either of them. I've been working with Van's to give
them all the info I have on the 290 installation in the hopes it will
help those who follow. It really hasn't been that difficult to do and I
can't wait to fly behind this engine.
As for empty weight, every O-290 powered -9A and the one -9 that is out
there have come in right around 1000 to 1020 lbs empty and as I said,
their numbers match what Van's has posted on their web site.
All good news.
If I were to do it again, I would buy an O-320, if I could find one for
a reasonable price. Sorry, but $10,000 for a mid time O-320 isn't
reasonable and Paul was looking for inexpensive alternatives, as was I.
There is a local -9A flying with a 108 hp O-235 and he LOVES his plane.
The -9A replaces a -6A he gave to his father and he regularly flight
plans at 150 MPH and can fly non-stop from OK to NC w/ IFR reserves. In
other words, it has long legs.
The ROC is just outstanding for these planes and we quickly forget that
a 172 can only climb at something like 650 FPM where as the O-235 can
climb at 1,000 FPM @ GW, which is just outstanding.
Sorry about the long post but all I ever hear is how you must have an
O-320 to make these planes fly, that is not so with the -9. Sure I
would like the faster speeds the O-320 gives, for Sunday flying and
cross country, the 175 mph I expect from my O-290-D2 is still moving
right along.

Hi Mike,
My 2 cents worth. The original factory 9 was powered
by an 0-235 lyc and it proved the engineers
performance projections.
It comes down to how much do you want to spend and how
fast do you want to go. I would think it unwise to put
less than 120HP on your air frame but anything between
120 and 160 is just a matter of choice.
I chose an older 150 HP lyc because I got a good deal
on one. It performs well for me. My friend put a new
160 HP on his and it performs better but burns a
little more fuel.
Decide what you want and then go for it.
